Good all-around SS are very valuable in MLB. Dipoto was able to ship a good all-around 2B on a 1yr deal in Kendrick for a top pitching prospect in Heaney

Eppler just traded a good all-around SS(more valuable than a good all-around 2B) on a 1 yr deal.....while also giving up the team's top 2 prospects, for an elite defensive, marginal bat SS

Would not be shocked at all if Atlanta immediately spins Aybar to some other SS needy team and gets something good back

Jose Briceno

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

A native of Venezuela, Briceno signed with the Rockies as a 16-year-old in 2009. After a productive 2014 season with Class A Asheville, he was acquired by the Braves as a part of the January trade that sent David Hale to the Rockies.

Briceno improved as a hitter in 2014, as he began using the whole field more and ironed out some flaws in his setup at the plate. He has some loft in his swing, allowing him to tap into his raw power.

Behind the plate, Briceno is still developing as a receiver. He has above-average arm strength and threw out 44 percent of would-be basestealers in 2014. He still has work to do, but Briceno's tools give him the chance to develop into a big league regular in time.

Okay guys... Simmons isn't "marginal." Not by a long shot. He's possibly the best defender of all time... He's an upgrade, a big one, and with 5 years of club control to boot. He's very valuable. Yes I get that we gave up a lot, too much even, but to say that Simmons is a "defensive specialist" is insulting to the guy who has no match defensively. It's not like he's completely inept with the bat either. He's a 85 OPS+ hitter with the best defense you've ever seen. 4 to 5 WAR is expected. He's 26 and coming into his prime. He's worth a lot.

you realize the 85 OPS + is atrociously bad.  Its well below major league average.

everyone is calling Eppler a retard, but really, all this means is that he doesn't value Newcomb nearly as much as others. Most of the people on this board are basing their opinion solely off of what they've heard 2nd and 3rd hand of Newcomb. Eppler knows more about him than any of us, so for now we just have to trust his evaluation. Time will tell if he's right or not.

We traded a home grown, fan loved, better performing short stop, our best starting pitching prospect, and another top rated pitching prospect for another short stop who is slightly under performing of Aybar? WTF

So true but the fans like winning more. Championships make old memories fuzzy. Andrelton is an adjustment away from being quite the hitter (Although we got rid of Don). Jordan Zimmermann looks more and more appealing everyday. Plus we only lost a year of control with Newcomb and Ellis doesn't worry me so much.

I am absolutely stoked we got Simmons, but I am absolutely disgusted with what we paid for him.  I feel violated, and it's not my money.   I'm going to go sit in a bucket of ice.   Good luck Aybar, going to miss your antics.  Good bye Newcomb, bummed we never got to see you here, don't feel so cool that I scored a signed Newcomb card in a waxpack either.

Incorrect. I know everything about Newcomb. He took out a restraining order as a result.

To quote a favorite line by Glenn, Eppler got beat like a soapy dick on this deal. Seriously, it's nice he's awesome defensively but he can't hit his ass with both hands and, by trading your biggest chip, you're further away from actually fixing your glaring offensive problem since you'll rely solely on free agency to address it
