  1. well, it's the Hector Santiago signing all over again -- now Santiago actually did OK for the Halos and I still think the Halos' 2016 deadline deal that sent Santiago to Minnesota and got us Nolasco (I think we got him in the deal or perhaps indirectly because of the deal) was a good move by the front office -- we unloaded Santiago after getting pretty good value of out him for the time he was here ---- But the Chavez signing signifies we're going the economical route for 2017.........signing a swing man type number 5 starter. If he works out the way Santiago did (and I am not saying Santiago was great, I am saying his time here Santiago pretty much exceeded the relatively low expectations we had for him as a swing man and Santiago actually put up some quality starts for us during his about two years in the rotation -- the rest of the time he was pen depth guy).
  2. OK -- perhaps I am wrong about the Rule V stuff - there is some advantage to taking a $25,000 flyer as some suggest. So what I am really stating is that if you're going to take a Rule V flyer, don't 'fall in love' with the Rule V player to the point you refuse to give him back AT ANY POINT during the season, rather than 1.) having him make the team over a better deserving player (just because he's a Rule V guy and you have to give him back); 2.) if the guy makes the 25 man roster, KEEP HIM ALL SEASON (despite the team's needs in other areas, pen depth, another bat, OF depth, other bench depth) just because he's a Rule V player AND 3.) if oyu reach May, approaching June, and the Rule V player has less than 50 ABs and (and in Featherson's case, NO HITS) -- cut him loose and send him back. We wasted a valuable roster spot on Featherston in 2015. I MIGHT (doubtful) HAVE understood is the guy was going to be our starter at 2B in 2016 and beyond --- but not only wasn't he that -- we essentially gave him away at the end of the season (which was fine from my stand point -- it just highlighted even more the complete waste of the roster spot during the season). So, take a flyer on some of the Rule V list guys ? Sure? Keep him all season ? Not necessary and actually counter-productive.
  3. as for us picking up a Rule 5 guy from another team -- I am against given our experience with T. Featherston two years back. Rule 5 guys have to stay on the MLB roster for the entire season or the team that picks the Rule 5 player loses him back to the player's prior team - no compensation. So unless the Rule 5 guy can either help you right now or be a starter within two years -- (and if either were the case, the player likely wouldn't be on the Rule 5 draft list to begin with). So I say no to picking up any rule 5 guy -- Featherston sat on our bench the entire 2014 season , used up a roster spot that could have been used for a more productive player -- I think Featherston got maybe 75 ABs all season, I know that he collected his first hit of the season that year at some point AFTER the All Star Game.......so, really, for most of the season Featherston had the most expensive spectator seat in the house..........
  4. Howie's time is running out. Philadelphia not expected to contend. this is horrible for nice guy HK who with the Angels and the Dodgers always gave his all -- and now he's being sent 3,000 miles from his West Coast home, playing for a non-contender and while he enters F/A in the future -- the clock is ticking on his time as an MLB starter......... I don't see a move to Philly -- if this deal is finalized -- good for HK at all.
  5. I like Jered Weaver and think the Halos should sign him to a one year incentive laden contract. but, realistically, that's not going to happen. for one, I think another pitcher's park NL team could probably out-bid the Halos for Weaver's services in 2017. that's fine. the Jered Weaver who had some quality starts in the second half of the 2016 season for the Halos can help some team in today's MLB. today's MLB because it's not the MLB rotations of the past when I grew up watching Gibson, Koufax, Drysdale, Steve Carlton etc. (a bit later, Nolan Ryan) in those rotations you need to go nine innings, start about 36 to 38 game a season, about 70 percent of them were Complete Games. now -- a quality start is a guy going six innings and allowing three runs.......back in the day that was called a loss........ it is what it is and has become. Jered Weaver can help some team -- preferably a pitcher's park NL team........I don't think we'll see him pitch in Anaheim for the home team again.
  6. I agree with totdprods -- perhaps Pelfry isn't a like kind example but there are others out there --look at guys who have absolutely FAILED for the Halos -- Fernando Rodney, Scott Kazmir and the Dodgers set up guy this year (the guy that finally came back to his 2-14 Halos form in the playoff series vs. the Cubs) -- all were pretty much DONE and even took time away from either MLB or baseball overall and came back........heck Kazmir was inked to a pretty decent contract by the Dodgers and he was absolutely DONE with the Halos -- who gave him every chance in every role to perform and he just was terrible -- he did bounce back with the A's and another team before landing with the Dodgers -- Fernando Rodney couldn't get anyone out at the end of his Halos stint and then he went on to become a key closer for who ? Detroit? Rodney has been on so many teams before and after the Halos, it's hard to keep track......... but Jered Weaver as a seasoned MLB pitcher who can eat innings -- who actually had some good quality starts in the second half of the season last year down what was 'the stretch' for the 'out of it, already' Halos -- he's going to get some interest.......I think he needs to pick a pitcher's park and he might do well to concentrate on an NL team where the pitcher bats so for most daily line ups (a few exceptions, Bumgarner etc.) you have that OUT spot at the bottom of the line up........San Diego, Los Angeles are teams that come to mind.....perhaps Milwaukee --- St. Louis once revived Jeff Weaver's career who was DONE only to be revived by the LaRussa/ Duncan combo to the point Jeff Weaver ended up winning post-season playoff and World Series games for the World Champion Cardinals......maybe Matheny can do the same thing........
  7. If you are asking which is more certain of pitching in 2017 -- I'd say Weaver. Neither one pitches in Anaheim. Going to be strange seeing Weaver in a different uniform........maybe the Dodgers will sign Jered -- pitcher's park -- he could be a fifth guy there.
  8. Weaver or Wilson -- where is the Neither option?
  9. YES - Halos not going to do much -- no blockbuster trades/ signings are going to get done.
  10. I would take Trumbo over Morales and so would anyone else. And, yes, there's a huge price tag difference there. We're not going to spend the money to sign Trumbo who would be wise to go to a hitter's park and really jack up his already good numbers. Trumbo is now poised to really be an impact player with solid career numbers and be one of this era's best power hitters (which means he's not playing in Anaheim next year). So given that -- gotta look at what is the differential between Cron and Morales projected numbers for 2017 and is it worth the extra money Morales' contract would cost us? On defense, I dare say that Morales has a slight edge on Defense........neither one great.
  11. Bud Black, former pitcher, former pitching coach, former manager at San Diego (a pitcher's park) the manager at Coors Field??? YIKES !!!!
  12. going to be a close vote for MVP --- I agree -- I had Altuve tabbed for MVP most of the season based upon what his final numbers projection --primarily hits and batting average -- but he really fell off down the stretch and then Houston failed to make the playoffs.........that leaves Betts as the only playoff guy. To me, it comes down to essentially a tie between Trout and Betts and given that, Trout's numbers over the past three years should have some impact on the vote (but probably won't). I think it's Trout's year to win it and anyone looking at the past few seasons has to see that. I'd go with Kluber for Cy Young but Porcello probably gets it and Comeback Player of the Year as well. Also, I agree with another prior post -- how is Donaldson left out as an MVP finalists candidate? That's an outrage right there. Donaldson would probably had won the MVP if he were a finalist........the guy is incredible and really propelled his team into the playoffs. NL Cy Young? I'd say Scherzer of the Nats.
  13. Vegas Halo Fan -- and that's exactly the kind of promotion that works and that baseball (in general) needs whether it be at the MLB level or in the minor leagues. Here, we had a semi-pro team for years (a real tradition that ended a few years ago when the main integral person keeping it going passed away and then it was kept afloat for a number of years after that but the volunteer effort and financial resources finally ran out and so it's gone now) and they would let kids in free, have a family type package and similar stuff to what you mentioned above.........now, not going to say the place was packed and the stands packed but a number of area families, often those with a number of kids -- would take the family out to the ballyard for some baseball (and they usually had a BBQ going) -- a real outlet for some low cost wholesome family entertainment -- something that is really needed these days, IMO.
  14. Steve Sax/ Chuck Knoblauch symptoms........ Quite frankly, I was amazed that in the Dodgers-Cubs series, the Dodgers didn't run on him EVERY TIME a guy got on first base.
  15. I am always amazed at out of area 'expert consultants' who arrive in a town (any area, any town, USA) to advise ownership (of almost any industry/ type of business) and in order to justify their contract price come up with recommendations that over- haul some aspect of the business that has been a long time tradition in the area.....and a tradition that area folks relate to and are somewhat proud of, if not, at least have some sort of acquired admiration for over a number of decades.......... this looks like exactly that -- so instead of doing something that would draw more fans -- like kids under 10 admitted free and /or having a family pack of food & drink at a bargain price (sort of like they do at Peoria Ballpark in Spring Training in Arizona) or making sure there are more comfortable shade seats where needed etc.......they do stuff like new name and logo -- these must be some of the same folks (or same thinking) behind the New Coca Cola (Coke) -- remember that fiasco?
  16. Escobar's 2016 season is the best for a Halos lead off hitter in a number of years. at the GM chat that was reported on here -- he was called the best Halos lead off hitter since Chone Figgins -- and many of us remember how Chone Figgins' speed made things happen. Escobar is not the best D at 3B or elsewhere in the infield -- but IMO he was/is an upgrade over Freese on D. With Escobar and Pujols -- these guys can platoon DH position with Escobar playing part time and Pujols playing 1B part time.
  17. troll daddy -- great pics of the kids...... great to see kids loving the game....... one issue MLB and quite frankly, our friends over at the NFL (I virtually stopped watching the NFL a number of seasons ago - I mean I'll catch part of a game if it's on -- but the days of really following it week to week and checking the standings has been in rear view mirror for me for quite some time now -- now college football -- that's a different story). need to face her soon is that sign ups for Little League and Pop Warner/ YFL youth leagues is down nationwide (well, probably not in Texas) and, at some point, that will impact the game at the professional level. the NFL right now is experiencing their first down turn in viewership, possibly attendance, in three decades -- there are several causes (my favorite is Kapernick's antics -- if I wasn't already NOT watching, I'd NOT be watching now) over-saturation etc. so, Troll Daddy - it's great to see young photogenic kids enjoying baseball. Congrats. Much to be proud about.........
  18. like others here -- I like this, Maybin has OBP, speed, some power, maybe 10-15 HRs and can play OF defense. Don't think he has a great arm, but not sure, he's in LF after all. and this won't break the bank for us to get a LF'er.
  19. still wish Dave Roberts would have let him have a chance to finish that no hitter..........
  20. watching game 6 -- Indians keep threatening to get back into the game by getting runners on base but can't quite score any runs to chip away at the five run lead.......had great chances last two innings to sort of climb back into the game and got shut down with out scoring. So I'm missing the first Kings-Ducks battle....both teams are a long way away from that great playoff series they had against each other -- what? three years ago now?
  21. I don't think I'd spend a ton of money to sign Rich Hill -- I mean, he may have a great 2017 - but at 2007 he is a real risk and a guy with injury history. The way these type of signings seem to work out for the Halos -- not sure I'd take the plunge here. obviously there's room for disagreement here and it appears some posters feel otherwise.
  22. ah, our KINGS are in trouble. Hope we can still be within striking distance of a playoff spot by the time Jonathan Quick gets back ---
