  1. well - I guess I am few years behind on some of the signings deals -- breaking news !!! that's what I get for not checking and guessing..........penalty box time for me.
  2. I think Ian Desmond went on the DL which explains the Nats need for Howie.........I'll always root for Howie to do well.
  3. listening to SF Giants/ LA Dodgers game -- SF broadcasters report that initial reports after check up at hospital sounded encouraging -- concussion protocol will be followed but the initial reports for Ray were positive re not suffering major injury.
  4. Eduardo Nunez traded by SF Giants to Boston Red Sox as a rental for two very young and raw pitching prospects...... Nunez a F/A in 2018. His possible team for 2018? SF Giants.
  5. Jim Fregosi 1967 (only won ONE -- Luis Aparacio and then Mark Belanger pretty much owned the AL award during Fregosi's time). Orlando Cabrera 2007 (broke Jeter's streak of 3 - many thought that would not happen -- that between Jeter being Jeter and the gold gloves being handed out to the 'guy who wins it every year' that O-Cab wouldn't get the votes -- his year on D with the Halos was so stellar -- he could not be denied). Erick Aybar , 2011 (I would not place Aybar in the same league with some of the top D SS's over the years - but he was a steady presence on D at SS for the Angels for a number of years). My favorite - soon to be displaced by a guy named Andrelton Simmons, GARY DiSARCINA ( Gold Gloves won - ZERO; but DiSar was a guy, who for whatever reason and the stats (like OPS and such) don't bear this out (perhaps WAR - hard to say) but the team just seemed to win when he was in the line up versus when he wasn't. Fourth Angels SS gold glove winner 2017-2020 - Andrelton Simmons.........but if in Vegas, you might want to list Lindor as the odds on favorite.
  6. All time Gold Glove SS -- OZZIE SMITH own the NL award 1980 -1992. In the AL -- It was OMAR VIZQUEL of Cleveland -- he won his first with Seattle in 1993 and owned the award with Cleveland through 2001. He won two more in the NL with the SF Giants in 2005, 2006. He was fabulous -- not the acclaim that the Wizard of OZ got but very much his equal on D , IMO. Luis Aparicio owned the Award (back when I think there might have been only one in MLB not one in each league) Aparacio of the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore O's won the award 1958-1962, '64, '66, '68, '70 -- NINE in that span. Mark Belanger of the Baltimore O's 1969, 1971, 1973-1978 trivia answer below:
  7. Trivia -- three Angels have won AL Gold Gloves at SS over the years -- who are they?
  8. going to be tough to top the media favorite Francisco Lindor of Cleveland at SS for gold glove -- but the NL gold glove winner for 2013 and 2014 with the Atlanta Braves (Adrelton Simmons) sure deserves strong consideration for the 2017 SS Gold Glove award. But these are the same folks who voted Buster Posey as NL gold glove catcher last year over Yadier Molina in the NL despite Yadier catching (and starting more games at C) than any other MLB catcher in 2016 -- so I don't hold out much hope. BTW -- this season only ONE catcher has PLAYED (not started, but played) more games at Catcher than Yadier Molina (as of last week)......who is that? HINT: he plays for the Los Angeles Angels and is having a stellar year.
  9. Yeah - A. Simmons is under contract for three more seasons, it's a least a year or may be even two away from discussing extension. As for his finding his offense game this year -- it would be great if that level of performance at the plate will continue from him, but don't count on it -- at some point he comes back to his career average level -- perhaps a bit above that. But his presence on D at SS is such is that, like Ozzie Smith at the outset of Smith's career, if Simmons bats .245 -- he's worth having out there -- I think Ozzie Smith hit .199 one year - have to look it up -- perhaps he was under .200 for much of the year and was able to finish above it. I do know that another great fielding SS - Eddie Brinkman of the old Washington Senators (among others) hit .199 one year and played close to 162 games with 400 plus ABs. Game was different then -- defense apparently meant more than it does now. Who wins gold glove at SS this year?
  10. see that tag at 2B tonight nabbing the runner when Maldonado threw to the wrong side of the bag? Simmons back handed the throw and brought the tag right down on the runner who was called OUT. the Indians reviewed the play and it was close, but he was still OUT. the runner had the base stolen, the throw was to the wrong side of the bag............Simmons is the one who STOLE the OUT on that play. it's little stuff like that that Simmons does day in, day out.........makes a difference.........
  11. might change my Angelswin.com name to Andrelton (is that how it's spelled?) or ASimmons next year..........
  12. I agree, He has very quickly become one of my favorite Halos of All Time. He's a fantastic player, great D, great instinct, good attitude --and he's really hitting this year as well !!! I think he's a tremendous ballplayer.
  13. Eduardo Nunez of the SF Giants was just taken out of the game vs.Pittsburgh up at AT&T Park in SF.........he was taken out of the game in about the 7th inning or so, Obviously has been traded..........trade will be announced after the game. MLB-TV and Giants broadcast showed pictures of Nunez coming off the field, down the tunnel and team -mates shaking his hand, saying their good byes...... where is he going -- will be announced soon.........
  14. well, perhaps MLB can allow designated runners like DH's -- so when a guy like Pujols gets on base -- you can have a speedster guy like Dyson (formerly of KC their championship season and now with Seattle, I think) run for him like old guy softball beer leagues......... even with that, Pujols would still probably be among the league leaders in GIDP category......... it was difficult to watch that Pujols AB in the ninth inning tonight..........
  15. yeah, late to the thread here - post- game -- but agree -- Pujols 0-5 or whatever he was -- but the main thing -- that ninth inning AB was pathetic. He looked just terrible at the plate.
  16. well, the NFL is in the stratosphere in terms of media money -- nothing like it in terms of market share anywhere. they just dominate when it comes to capturing advertising dollars on all media -- there's really no second place to NFL in that -- (drops to third or fourth LOL!!) but NCAA football is probably next overall being beat by NCAA tournament madness in terms of condensed one week/ ten day concentration of dollars (really that first week, may be the second, actually tails off by the final four). where this report is gong to be a real issue for the NFL and football in general is that it will accelerate the current trend of Mom's not letting their kids play YFL and then High School Football.........fewer kids playing ball will lead to future drop in market share -- just look at Little League and baseball (but that's not health related, it's just because baseball is too slow with too little action in today's world of extreme sports, individual sports).......... and the NFL, kinda of like MLB, (yeah they have that inner-city RBI program which I applaud and is a good effort but probably not enough) is sort of like the lobster in the boiling pot........it's going to catch up with NFL and MLB and when it does, the drop off may be swift and steep.
  17. not much at deadline time but could be part of an off-season trade package for a rotation guy. I always liked him -- I tend to discount SLC BA and offensive numbers -- and AAA in general. But he's a good defensive catcher -- we got Maldonado who has proven to be stellar behind the plate for us.
  18. yeah -- a little wordy -- sorry
  19. a poster asked - 'what's the deal about Sonny Gray?" as in, why all the focus on him to the near exclusion of others? Because, he's the most economically priced available rotation guy with an upside on the current market, that's why -- he's just the opposite of big contract, risky Vegnirlander trade, signing. Some talk here of the M's being IN or the Sonny Gray talks with the A's -- now that's perfect -- DiPoto will drain whatever is left of the M's farm system (posters here who know far more about that than I do, say there's not much in the M's pipeline now) and if Gray goes to the M's it's almost guaranteed he'll wind up like most of the M's big F/A signings (who was that pitcher they got from Baltimore who got big bucks with them and did diddly squat, they signed Jeff Weaver to a big contract after he rehabilitated his career with those St. Louis post- season wins and Weaver tanked in Seattle) so if the M's get Gray, he winds up on the DL long term and the M's farm system is wiped out for the next five years........ aside from Robinson Cano, I can't think of any major F/A signings that have worked out for the M's over the years --- starting with future HOF'er Adrian Beltre who hit 45 HRs in Los Angeles and then sent to Seattle where he was batting below the Mendoza line at the All Star Break the next season in Seattle......got away from Seattle and renewed his stellar career with Boston, Texas etc.
  20. someone mentioned no TV contract would be forthcoming for the A's or any MLB team in Vegas -- well, they really don't have much of one now in Oakland...... it might still be the case, you can't get the A's on over the air radio unless you almost in the ballpark -------of course the radio network stuff not as important now with MLB.com audio where any fan can get any MLB game home or away feed on their phone for less than $20 a year. NFL is just perfect for Vegas - it's made for that 8/9 Sundays a year schedule -- heck -- Vegas on Sundays has become NFL Central.......bunch of folks fly in, drive in (from LA) now just to watch the games there as well as the big Saturday college games.........don't think MLB will ever reach that status in Vegas....... But when comparing to Oakland, the bar is low. Things can't get worse for the A's in Oakland -- if the Coliseum Commission there (which is made up of representatives from multiple jurisdictions -- which has always been a problem issue there -- no one Commission or jurisdiction can act to make THE or ANY decision so Stadium plans (for all sports, Raiders, Warriors, A's) get bogged down in bureaucratic in-fighting and jurisdictional disputes........it takes a lot to lose major league teams (the Raiders TWICE) in multiple sports but Oakland has managed to do it.........only Bid Selig and now the current Commissioner have saved Oakland from leaving -- for some reason, MLB wants the A's to die on the vine there in Oakland...........surely Las Vegas -- while not having all the demographics and numbers MLB would like to see -- Vegas is a unique place and a visitors' haven.......you almost have to add the long weekend crowd for big events when doing marketing surveys there. that fight -- what within the last two years -- the Mayweather fight -- all the media reports were that even Vegas had never seen anything like it in terms of the swarms of people arriving in the City just to be near the event and part of the vibe in the City -- it was unreal......... The new NHL team will be a good test -- 41 home games or so.......I think you'll see LA Kings and Ducks fans there for their games and I think fans of other teams will decide to make a road trip to see their teams, spend an extra day/ night in Vegas -- the fact that its so easy to get flights to and from Vegas from almost anywhere really helps. I've always thought once one pro team made Vegas its home the other professional sports would follow like lemmings........ NBA -- not so sure -- point shaving issues and the popularity of the 'home team' the UNLV Runnin' Rebs may have them hesitating -- but if the Golden Knights (that's not the Natural , that's the NHL team) are a success, expect the NBA to follow.
  21. well, except for Darvish among those listed in the post above , I'm referencing players still on the board. I agree Quintana and Martinez were top 'gets' but so is Sonny Gray, Britton and of course, Darvish. Verlander brings an injury plagued recent past plus a huge contract with him -- so it's going to have to be the Yankees or the Dodgers for him. I don't see the Angels in the Sonny Gray mix and I don't think Billy Beane would trade him to a division rival with that much time left on his contract. So unless it's Trout going the other way (yeah - that would happen - A's can't afford Trout's contract and Angels wouldn't trade him) - I don't see it.............if i were Beane I might settle for A. Simmons, Bedrosian and a back of the rotation starter -- perhaps even Nolasco (but his contract is up this year - right? he's not going to hit the magic IP mark to exercise the player option -- so probably not him) -- Meyer? I am not for such a trade, but might make sense from A's standpoint --particularly if Angels would pick up part of Simmons' contract. - again, I think Simmons is a tremendous player and a guy to build a team around.........
  22. Troll Daddy -- well, I guess you are right. Right now the below ,500 Angels and Mariners , some 12 games back of AL West leading Houston, are 2.5 games out of the second wild card spot. Just reminds me why I don't like this new format. I wish they would have the two wild card teams do more of a College World Series type approach -- two out of three. perhaps delay the series where the number four seed in each league plays the winner/ survivor of the wild card playoff........
  23. VEGAS HALO FAN: Today's LA TIMES (Sunday, July 23) has a story on the sport page front page about Las Vegas very suddenly becoming a 'major league' city with the new NHL team, the Raiders moving there, the NBA summer league being very successful this summer --- and it mentions that the NFL (Raiders) is just a natural fit (one game a week) while the NHL and others may not be as much (although local season ticket sales for the new NHL team are strong and very impressive - the Times article said more tickets to individuals have been sold than the anticipated corporate sweep of all the good seats). So -- my question is - NHL, NFL and the NBA (All Star game and summer league -- perhaps a team soon -- although UNLV seems to have the hoops market there and always has) why not MLB -- like the Oakland A;s? Build a baseball only retractable roof ball park (like Safeco in Seattle and like the BOB in Phoenix) and I have to believe the Las Vegas A;s would draw better than the Oakland A's (the A's had 9,400 attendance at a game last week in Oakland)........ The article mentioned the Professional Bull Riders events contracted for the Thomas & Mack for the next ten years but made NO mention of the PRCA contracting to keep the National Finals Rodeo there (at Thomas & Mack) for the next decade plus as well..........I was disappointed the Times failed to mention that - before the NHL and the NFL , NFR and professional boxing were the 'pro sports' mainstays in Vegas,
  24. always had a hole in his swing......detected by MLB pitchers. his defense at 1B wasn't great -- however -- have to say he has improved in that area -- still no gold glove down there.
  25. I could see Billy Beane stringing this thing out and waiting until Monday (July 30) or Tuesday (July 31) to gain leverage and extract the best combination of MLB ready players and prospects. With Sonny Gray under contract for next year, I could also see Billy Beane pulling back telling teams he's willing to keep Gray if he can't get what he wants -- and buyers trying to play his bluff only to find out -- Beane meant it.
