  1. Nolan Ryan may be right -- but he's from another era and this generation of MLB is going in the other direction. The Ohtani effect -- if the one start a week plan works and is effective -- may start a trend of six man rotations, once a week pitchers who pitch five/ six innings and then have deep pens of pre-set up guys and pre pre set up guys and closers finish up the game ------that's the trend. 150 -175 IP starters vs. Nolan Ryan's day of guys making 35-40 starts, pitching complete games and 300 plus innings a year.......those days are gone -- probably forever. that being said, I like Nolan Ryan's way better. I still would put Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson, Bob Feller and few others in their prime against any of today's starters. (Although I have to give a shout out to one guy who I think could hang with those HOF'ers -- Clayton Kershaw and one other guy who has the work ethic - if not the 'stuff' of those guys - Madison Bumgarner).
  2. yeah, let's see a few games in Tempe and then twice through the league to see if the $22 million paid to his Japanese team qualifies as a charitable contribution or not. and before all that, let's see if he can throw/ bat at all when he shows up in Tempe. still, this is going to be good for the Halos -- I imagine ticket sales are up and plans are being made to install a larger press box area to accommodate all the foreign press corp, Ohtani's AB and IP's are going to likely be broadcast live in Japan
  3. am sure some folks here remember when Enberg first took over the 10 pm KTLA NEWS AT 10 sports anchor role. back in the day before all the big TV rights and restrictions and MLB.com etc. Enberg used to do the 10 PM news (when the Angels had a home game) from the ballpark and then would do some play by play at the end of news games often being able to call the last out (I can't remember if KTLA let him stay on past 11 to finish the game -- I think they did if it was the 9th inning and pretty close to being over). but that was great -- you could catch his sports cast and then the end of the Halos game. He was just in his element doing that. Like a kid in a candy store. then came the UCLA basketball run -- Enberg teamed up for interviews with John Wooden -- WOW !!!
  4. Enberg and Drysdale called games were a real delight to listen to --- they had obviously were good friends and the broadcasts with those two was a conversation between two very knowledgeable baseball friends and the audience got to listen in........... Enberg wasn't Scully. Enberg called Scully the greatest baseball announcer of all time and Scully called Enberg the best all around announcer of all time. Remember, Enberg did all sports for many years, before Scully started his stint with CBS where Scully did football and golf and some other sports. Scully called some national broadcast football games for CBS and did ok -- but from the listener perspective it always seemed a bit strange hearing Scully calling football after all that Dodger (and later NBC baseball). Enberg was good calling all sports -- and - yes - I agree with the poster who said Enberg's best work was the nationally broadcast college basketball games with Al McGuire. That was a combo that couldn't be topped.
  5. I'm rooting for Hamels every time he pitches now.
  6. Ausmus front office job may be to sit with Arte in Arte's suite during the games.......
  7. Cue up Elvis "It's Now or Never" - if Sosh does not make the playoffs with all the off-season upgrades plus Ohtani -- well. It's curtains. If he makes the playoffs, perhaps even wins another championship (good news ! was watching an MLB show last week -- Harold Reynolds and company, I think Mark Teixiera was on the panel as well -- and they picked the MLB's top six teams -- no one picked the Angels as one of the top six despite having the Halos logo there as one of 12 or so teams they could select from -- it was set up sort of like Corso's Saturday morning college football picks but with logo placards instead of mascot heads) NO ONE PICKED THE ANGELS in the top six -- in my book that's like missing the SI cover !! -- but if Sosh's Angels make the playoffs/ win it all this year, I think 2019 would then be his 20th and final season as Halos manager. Meanwhile, folks are mentioning Girardi -- but didn't I read somewhere that the Halos have brought Brad Ausmus into the front office...........manager in waiting??
  8. yeah -- this news just in (I posted we should take a look at him) -- but did not make a big splash and the MLB.com report I saw today say the news of CC's $10 million one year deal sort of leaked out and has not been officially confirmed. But it's happening. Not sure what other starting pitching options are available out there in the Halos' price range.
  9. Cron for some pen depth. Houston signed Joe Smith to a two year deal -- Smith pitched well for us -- good pen guy - Houston just got him and the champs look better for 2018. We should trade Cron for some pitching -- pen depth perhaps a spot starter. I think we should make a pitch to sign CC Sabathia and pitch him once a week like Ohtani. then we have about four other starters that could work around that schedule and one of those starters could possibly be more of a swing man -- long relief (more in terms of an early inning guy rather than number of innings -- which limit him to two IP per pen appearance -- and some starts fitting in around Ohtani and CC). Angels strong up the middle. Let's keep expectations in place -- Ohtani has not had one MLB AB yet and has not pitched one MLB inning yet -- but it's going to be an interesting season. I still like Simmons as a the defensive spark plug up the middle at SS with his DP combo now Kinsler and Cozart can play 3B,SS and 2B when called upon. Geez -- I look at the roster and I think we have a real quality line up -- with one big caveat. An Angels fan pal of mine (he's only been watching Angels games since the days of Jim Fregosi and Albie Pearson) insists that Pujols has some contract term or understanding that he bats no lower than fourth in the Halos line up --- I don't believe that -- but really -- Pujols (Mr. GIDP) needs to be batting about 7th or 8th this season = when he plays.
  10. I like this guy -- send Cron over to the Phillies.
  11. HK in a bench depth/ platoon role for us -- I could go for that. How are his wheels? OK? Always liked HK -- played well last year for Washington when he got a chance to play. I'd sort of would prefer nabbing Philadelphia's 2B from last year as our every day 2B guy,
  12. don't know what his asking price is - but with Ohanti pitching once a week, you could put Sabtathia on the same type of rotation and make him more effective over the long season. Halos would go from a so-so rotation to a pretty nasty one fairly quickly. Sabathia, I think can still be a solid six inning starter...........once a week. Ohtani may force MLB to re-think five man rotations..........
  13. Petit was pretty good with the SF Giants -- never understood why they let him get away. He pitched well for us in a variety of situations. For the Giants (and, perhaps for us) Petit could be used for a spot start from time to time. Not sure why we are letting Petit get away to a division rival. Plus, Petit goes back to the Bay Area where he performed pretty well over across the Bay at AT & T. Good move by the A's -- not such a good move by our front office. Gotta scratch my head on this one. Maybe Petit is past his prime - -perhaps - but he's put up some pretty good numbers as some of the prior posts reference.
  14. gurn67 -- that would be an issue -- forgot about that 'stat' he has.
  15. Reyes is 34 -- I remember him at Coors with Colorado -- he was back with the Mets the past two seasons. Heck - last year he had 501 ABs. He's not being retained by the Mets? He'd be an option but with 501 ABs last year -- he'l want starting line up kind of money and at 34 - a multi-year deal -- perhaps his last big MLB contract. I don't think we can sign him for the kind of money we'd want to spend on a bench depth guy -- even though it's the extra money contenders spend on the depth guys like this (both position players and pen depth guys) that make them contenders..........
  16. Jose Reyes would mean the Halos would have a platoon type situation for 2B/ 3B --- is that what we want? Sometimes platoons work -- more often they don't. Reyes is not the all around player he once was - he's probably lost a step or two in speed which is a real performance issue for speedster players like Reyes. Live by the wheels, and deteriorate by the wheels........ where did Reyes wind up last year? Colorado? Coors Field -- I have to check to see.......he did ok as a part time guy, spent some time on the DL. Depending on what the Halos would pay for him -- I could see him filling that Mark McLemore, Chone Figgins type role being versatile and while not a starter per se - getting 300 ABs or so and helping the team.........what is Reyes these days ? 35/36 years old? When he first came up (with the Mets?) he was quite the ballplayer -- even had some decent power in addition to speed, hit for an average, stole bases and was better than average with the glove at 2B (more so than 3B).
  17. sounds like a PED issue -- but , if not, may be worth a flyer. but sounds like MLB may be handing down suspension soon -- how does that work for a guy who's released? Has to serve suspension upon being re-signed?
  18. or Josh Paul should have thrown the first -- tagging the runner right in front of him made more sense at the time. the one thing you don't do is roll the baseball back towards the mound which is what he did.
  19. geez -- just saw this -- for real? AnaheimBob has it absolutely right -- at the end of the day it really doesn't matter if it was a 'clean' catch or not or even if the ump (mistakenly? absent-mindedly? forgetfully?) gave the OUT sign signal -- the Catcher in that situation should NEVER PLAY UMPIRE -- tag the runner -- EVERY TIME. If the catcher does that, NO ISSUE. To this day -- while I too give Perzynski (spelled way wrong) a bad time when he comes to the plate vs. Halos (his MLB playing days are done now, though), I don't blame him for the 2005 fiasco -- in fact, I think he did what a smart opponent (and catcher) would do in that situation and try to create confusion (which he did) where there really was none. Heads up play on his part as far as I am concerned. Bone-head play by our new 'bench coach' GEEZ -- that guy? OK -- let's wait until next year -- that would be 2019.
  20. Ausmus is a pretty good 'bench' for manager in waiting. Another guy - once, apparently on the informal, un-listed, un-charted 'depth chart' for manager-in-waiting -- Gary DiSarcina -- was a bench coach for the Boston Red Sox last season -- DiSar has bounced back and forth between the Angels and Red Sox his entire professional baseball career (including his playing days) -- that string may have come to an end when the Red Sox fired John Farrell (after a pretty successful season and managerial run - heck - his team lost in the 2017 playoffs -- Angels would consider that a very successful season) and hired former infielder Cora -- first thing Cora did was fire Farrell's hold over 'bench coach' - Gary DiSarcina. And, after all the back and forth with the latest Halos stint for DiSar being, in part, his absolute disaster of a performance as third base coach (what - two years of that?) where the Angels - in the new era of MLB rules that seriously favor base-runners - certainly over catchers --- had more players thrown out at the plate during that DiSar reign as 3B coach than, I'm almost certain, any other MLB team." Other candidates-in-waiting - Ron Roenecke (spelled wrong), Bud Black etc. have left for other managerial jobs. Roenecke left and came back at least once...I think Oh well. My choices for Halos -- guys like Ausumus, Matheny (if availalable), Biggio, etc. (and, of course, Bud Black - my first choice for manager successor but that was some ten years ago).
  21. a very young Wally Joyner there -- his time with the Angels was short but very memorable. he was a true sensation and a real fan favorite -- Wally World was in some ways similar to Fernandomania and later Nomo-mania with the Dodgers. there have been some truly great players on the Angels (Nolan Ryan, Vlad etc.) and the Dodgers (Koufax, Drysdale etc.) but few have had the sort of 'movement type' impact/ following as these guys. My late father, a real baseball fan who thought Ted Williams had the best/ sweetest swing of any MLB player -- thought Wally Joyner's swing in those early years was of a quality right up there with Ted Williams......Wally Joyner is an ALL TIME Halos team guy in my book simply because of the impact he had on the fan base while here - I remember being disappointed when he left the Angels for Kansas City.........his best playing days were behind him then -- but he did manage to have a decent 10 years or so MLB career. Meanwhile -- Wally George -- GEEZ -- that goes back -- got his TV start (I think) as the announcer/ producer of the old Sam Yorty Show. Now, that's going back.........
  22. Profar worth a flyer -- and we need a 2B -- he would be an upgrade over what we'd be going with now.
  23. Andrelton Simmons was the Halos team MVP for 2017 IMO. It's not all stat driven analysis -- team just is stronger with Simmons in the line up playing SS. and then his offensive was pretty good this year as well.......... but Simmons could be an MVP just for his D -- someone was marveling over Correa (Houston's SS) -- and Correa is a great player -- ON D - I'd take our guy over Correa.
  24. but then to do his Babe Ruth act pitching and hitting - he would probably have to play in the AL. DH three games in row, day off, starting pitcher next day, then DH 3 games etc........ Yankees move to the top of the list.
  25. Los Angeles may be his landing spot -- but up the freeway a bit.
