  1. Upton should have responded -- "Geez, Giguere coming up big for the Mighty Ducks in net............"
  2. Darvish? Not a fan -- hope some other team over-pays for him,
  3. astros seem to be stocking up on starting pitching....... either they expect a lot of injuries OR they are stock-piling and going to pull some major deadline deals for teams starved for rotation guys. Morton, Peacock and other Houston starters who got them there last year......... now they are going after Darvish, too? A Darvish return to a Texas team and within the AL West makes sense. Didn't seem to fit in the NL.
  4. SI says that many teams are waiting out this year's F/A crop and waiting for the better pickin's in next year's F/A class. Also, I think even without that -- owners are paying some of the elite guys more than ever but that's a very limited few. The other guys - like lumbering corner infielders (Hosmer/ Moustakas) are seen as not good investments -- teams figure they can pay some up and comer a lot less and differential is not that great at the margins --- a .285 BA with 35 HRs , 105 RBI for those high priced guys vs. .265 BA , 23 HR and 85 RBI means for the younger 'under club control guy at the MLB minimum of $500,000 or less) means if you sign the high priced guy you are paying about $10 million plus a year for 20 more points in the BA, about 25 more rbi's and maybe 15 more HRs with, perhaps, the glove side being a wash. Teams / GMs figure save that money and spend it on pitching.............
  5. Has anyone signed (over-paid) for Darvish yet? Back to the Dodgers? Unless his signing demand drops way down (and if that happens, Dodgers re-sign him before it gets too low) Hope Halos stay far away. Even when he was the proclaimed (not sure by who) 'cream of the crop' of last year's trade deadline starters -- I wasn't sold on the guy and am still not. The W/S performances weren't exactly a surprise to some (like me and others here I 'm sure).
  6. Perez's defense is what got him sent out and had him in Scioscia's dog house. Perez actually hit pretty well at times (and then not so well) -- but I don't think it's his bat that got him ratcheted down on the Halos depth chart. Now with Maldonando and Rene Rivera -- Halos are going to be solid behind the plate and Scoiscia won't hesitate to start Rivera for Sunday day games and other selected games -- perhaps those day game get-away games after a night game and other 'business persons' special day games' -- again -- almost always a end of series get-away day for both teams.
  7. paying this new back up guy $2.8 million? that means Maldonado's price to settle for just went up -- how about two years at $6.5 million - if he tested the market Maldonado might get more than that.
  8. Erstad Grit - that's an understatement -- I had no idea he was a Batting Coach of any kind. perhaps it's only a Tempe ST type of thing?
  9. i thought the Halos extended Maldonado already - I would not gamble in arbitration with him (teams usually don't go to arb with players they want) -- I think Maldonado could win his arbitration and is very valuable to any team he would be on...........Halos can't lose him or let him get ticked off by the arbitration process and be in a 'can't wait to leave' mode. looking at that list - expect a bunch of signings this week.
  10. pretty good deal for one year starter. Heaney pitched some decent games for us when not injured. if he could be a solid 4 or 5 guy for us -- things would be going well for us.
  11. agree with guy who said take BART in and out. opening night could be a tough ticket but the next night should be able to get real good seats -- even walk ups. other than opening day/ night -- you should be able to get real good seats at the Coliseum -- a lot better than you can get at the Big A and for a lot less. not a great ball park -- Davis Mountain took away the great view of the Oakland Hills out beyond CF years ago -- but once you're settled in, not a bad place to watch a ballgame -- some devout A's fans are very knowledgeable, faithful and very few in number.
  12. He goes in as a Halo and Angels Nation needs to make it happen by doing what Angel fans never seem to do -- MAKE SOME NOISE AND A FUSS. He spent about as many years as a Angel as an Expo (one more as an Expo) and the clincher -- HEY HOF Committtee/ MLB -- NOLAN RYAN SHOULD BE WEARING A HALOs CAP in the HOF. If MLB/ HOF thinks its a close call, or even a tie --- then it's tIme for one of those make up calls -- VLAD goes in as an ANGEL.
  13. Wally World was a sensation when Joyner first joined the club. He was a true fan favorite and had a very sweet swing. It didn't last very long -- but fans loved him and still do.
  14. Carlos Perez become trade bait - and he would be a good addition to some club. Perez played well for the Halos but at one point during the second half of the 2016 season (I think it was) he sort of had some defensive lapses and Scioscia lost faith in him -- in fact, didn't he get sent down for most of the rest of the season......his playing time dipped big time and by then Maldonado stepped up to become, really, one of the better defensive catchers in all of MLB (IMO) -- I think Maldonado solid work behind the plate has been sort of an unheralded aspect of the Halos -- they're strong up the middle (A. Simmons/ Trout etc.) and Maldonado is part of that. I think if you check the stats, Maldonado may have caught more games in 2017 than any other MLB catcher -- KC's Sal Perez and St. Louis' YADIER usually take that title - but KC's Perez was on the DL --- and Yadier was as well -- although I think YADIER still finished second in that category --YADIER should have gotten the gold glove over the Cincy catcher. Maldonado is in the league of elite defensive catchers with Sal Perez and YADIER IMO. Who over is Maldonado's back up is not going to get much playing time and a lot of time warming up pitchers in the bullpen.
  15. Dochalo said it would be a paper plane if it happens - which it won't Ausmus not a chance to manage in Anaheim?? I think otherwise. Ausmus' job this year will be to sit in a suite during home games with the owner and GM.........that's best view of the ballpark and the organization....... it's sort of like moving up the organization in the military or in law enforcement -- a lot of generals, sheriffs, police chiefs were once chauffeurs to the big boss at a prior point in their careers.........driving Mr. Arte -- that being said, I don't see Scioscia going anywhere this season but could be his last if Halos, after all the off-season moves, don't make the playoffs. Look at this past season, two managers - who MADE the PLAYOFFS -- were let go -- including Girardi who I thought did a great job this season -- well he did miss a re-play call in the playoffs. Speaking of playoffs and a missed call/ play -- is it even possible that JOSH PAUL could be even considered as a potential skipper for the Halos..........? Is he going to teach the catchers to roll the back to the pitcher's mound on questionable strike three calls????
  16. I'm still not used to Upton being a Halo............. consistent over time to me means guy on same team for a period of time as well. Oh well, now Upton will be here for a while...........geez - all of sudden we have one of the better OF's in baseball......... Simmons? I hope he didn't peak last year at the plate.........I think if he's placed right in the line up -- last year will not have been a 'peak' year for him. Hey folks -- the challenge the Halos face next season is where do you bat Pujols in the line up? If Halos are forced to keep him in the three or four spot -- well, that's a lot of GIDPs and runs off the board. I'd move Pujols way down and Simmons up to sixth, maybe fifth.
  17. if we have two of them -- I am guessing TROUT and, and ?? I'd say Simmons but he was hurt last year........Calhoun? Don't say Pujols -- but he may have the stats actually. I guess they don't count the GIDPs
  18. Garret Anderson -- for a ten year period he was -- I kept thinking he was getting into HOF territory if he kept the pace up. during a 10-15 year run he averaged 180 hits a season and during his era consistently was among the top 5 in total hits over 5 to 10 year measurement period. Today's its probably Trout and Altuve in that territory.
  19. I like the Los Angeles road jerseys and -- heck yeah -- wear those into Chavez Ravine ---that would be great. I swear - when the Angels first changed their name back to Los Angeles, the Dodgers announcers either were ordered to (Vin Scully included) to refer to the Angels only as THE ANGELS and not the LOS ANGELES ANGELS -- either they were ordered to do that or they just on their own refused to call the Angels the LOS ANGELES ANGELS. the Dodgers franchise was very upset with the Halos name change and even intervened in court on the City of Anaheim's side. I also like the hockey jersey especially the white on red one on the right side -- and the Blue background one with the haloed A looks good too. Let's lose the Anaheim Angels winged A look -- geez those remind me of the Disney years and cheerleaders on the dug out...........
  20. Hopefully not us.........let's have a decent April for a change.........last year I think we were at .500 at the end of April which is good news for Halos. in prior seasons (I think three years in a row before last year), we started so poorly and dug such a hole for the team coming out of April -- we seemed to spend the rest of the season trying to climb back into respectability let alone contention - with little to no room for error (like the short three / four game losing streak that comes along) the second half of the season. My prediction for the most under-performing/ disappointing team for 2018 are the two old stand by's in this category - the Seattle Mariners and the New York Mets. For the guy who said the Yankees - they look pretty good - we'll see.
  21. I don't think we need more in the OF right now -- we're pretty set there. our need is some pen depth. maybe a versatile MIF speedster bench depth guy who can play 2B/SS and PR and bunt. I think - perhaps - a fifth starter type -- hard to tell. other than that - we're pretty set. If Ohtani is going to DH, we need a speedster to run for Pujols in the fifth inning on when he plays 1B -- we then need a platoon guy / good glove 1B for late innings -- to pull from the Halos past think Jim Spencer/ JT Snow -- heck if we could set a Darrin Erstad that would be even better......a guy who hustles, can get a lot hits, runs the bases well and is a gold glover at 1B and the OF..........that might be asking a bit much for a platoon player. with Ohtani and Pujols on the roster......Halos going to have a number of platoon guys...........
  22. Mike S stays all 2018. if Halos don't make playoffs after all their off-season moves, it could be Scioscia's final season. Didn't Halos hire Ausmus as a special assistant to the owner/ GM for 2018 - he could be the 2019 manager in waiting. if Halos make 2018 playoffs and have a decent playoff run -- advance past first round at least -- then Scioscia probably stays and walks away after 2019.
  23. I'd stay far far away from Kazmir -- been there done that -- I still think the guy is scamming teams -- and wants the money but does not want to work that hard. seems to have an effective run when it's time to produce to sign a new multi-year contract and then disappears. Kazmir (and there are others ) and guys like him are a good reason why MLB should look to the NBA 10 day contract example. On that list - Leake makes the most sense and I wouldn't sign any of them until right at ST and then for a steep discount, one year deal with incentives/ one year club option.
  24. !. Autry --- no. 26 is always number one in my book. 2. Fregosi - first star of the new franchise - long the identity of the team -- obviously not the best player/ stats. 3, Nolan Ryan -- perhaps one of most dominating pitchers of all time - 7 no hitters, 4 with the Halos -- the Bavasi quote - 'go get me two 8-7 pitchers' should be at the base of statute. 4, MIKE TROUT -- acknowledged as the best player in MLB the past few seasons -- perhaps only player Halos have to claim such a thing. 5. Vlad -- the first real position player superstar the Angels had for a considerable amount of his career (Don Baylor had a great career and a great MVP season as a Halo - but considered a member of other teams more so than the Halos -- now if you want to have a 'best single season' player type ranking - guys like Baylor, Darrin Erstad , J-Rod make it -- at the other category would be 'most consistent' Halos - stat wise - which means career leaders and that's where guys like Garret Anderson, Tim Salmon, Chuck Finley, Troy Percival are listed).
