  1. When Impemba first came to the Angels he was paired with Bob Starr..........those two got along well - unfortunately - it was for too short of a time. After Starr passed away, Impemba became the pbp guy. He did well -- with Daron Sutton. Both left for other opportunities at the same time and the Angels went on to win it all in 2002. Impemba is from Michigan and during his early broadcasting career did pbp for college sports in Michigan - so when the Tigers job opened up - it allowed him to return home and to probably also return to broadcasting college sports during the baseball off-season. An added bonus was that during his first few years with the Tigers, legendary Detroit Tigers' longtime broadcaster Ernie Harwell shared the booth for selected home games...........that was a great thing for Impemba who grew up listening to Harwell. For Tigers' fans sake and the TV/ radio listeners there -- I hope Impemba survives this incident and stays on there in Detroit.
  2. I was very optimistic for 2018. I really thought with Trout and Ohtani excitement, Simmons being a solid up the middle guy at SS with his offense better than Halos ever expected -- and then I liked Maldonado behind the plate -- the rotation a bit suspect but serviceable and all teams seemed to be the same situation re starting pitcher. This is why the Halos are likely to be making an announcement very soon -- Mike Scioscia will not be back in 2019 and will be (perhaps) assigned to a new front office role. I really had hopes for this year - more so than in some other recent years when the optimism turned to another disappointment.......a manager can only have so many of those type of years -- and Scioscia is like a cat on his 11th life.
  3. I think it was a DiPoto deal -- but one of the better pick ups (trade) we made in recent years was getting pen guy Frieri (could never spell his name right). It was a sort of a nothing deal -- pretty much two failed pitchers who needed a change of scenery. Frieri wound up being one of our more effective guys out of pen -- was our closer for about two seasons -- did he make the All Star team (or may have just been considered for it)..... Had something like 25 maybe 30 saves for the Halos one year -- and then towards the end of his time with the Halos - the glass slipper came off, he lost the closer's role, was ineffective for a few outings - and then traded to some place like Pittsburgh (and we got a decent pen guy in return who helped the Halos while he was here) --- I think Frieri may be out of baseball by now -- he bounced around to a few teams since leaving the Halos -- that deal was great for us because the expectations for Frieri were low to non-existant - nothing. so these nothing type deals, waiver wire pick ups sometimes work out.
  4. the point to the prior post -- some team likely to over-pay (relative to value) of Gonzalez if he pitches relatively well, Milwaukee makes it to the playoffs and Gonzalez is effective in the playoffs as well Some team then over-pays for him (hope it's not our Halos) and he stumbles out of the game for his 2019 team.
  5. I assume Gio Gonzalez is a rental for Milwaukee. Good pick up for them down the stretch. Nats vaunted rotation -- which included Gonzalez - never seemed to to reach it's potential and/or all the hype. Gonzalez has been inconsistent in his starts -- at times pitching very well but other times having an awful starts. I went to a SF Giants/ Nats series up at AT&T about two years ago.......the Scherzer, Gonzalez and Strasberg -- the rotation got rocked. The Giants swept. The Nats fell in the standings. they were picked to win the NL East and make a deep playoff run - it didn't happen. Brewers will bolster their rotation down the stretch here - trying to stave off the Cardinals and catch the Cubs. I agree with a prior poster -- Gonzalez would be a good 'buy low' candidate in the off-season. Much will depend how he does down the stretch. I remember Jeff Weaver, after having a terrible season late in his career, wound up in St. Louis, had a few terrible initial starts with them but then turned things around, won some key games down the stretch and pitched well in the playoffs as the Cards advanced to the World Series........he turned all that into a sizeable contract during the off-season as the post season performance significantly increased his value and what teams would pay to sign him...........he probably should have stayed with the Cards in his comfort zone where he was effective. instead he signed what must have been his biggest paycheck and wound up reverting him to the prior form (before he turned things around in St. Louis) and I think was released from his new team in August or September.
  6. another fading star with a big contract. NO. We have our limit of those guys.
  7. I'd say YES to Halos making a pitch for DeGrom if he's going to be made available. MLB with F/A has gotten to the point where each off-season there are about four elite players available who take all the oxygen (and money) out of the market -- and then there's everyone else. DeGrom would be one of those 'four our five' guys and probably breaking the bank (present and future) and selling the farm (we've done that before) to provide for a 'win now' window for Trout, Pujols and I'd add Ohtani. But if you get out-bid for DeGrom (a likely scenario with the Halos) - I think you revert back to 2019/20 really being a re-building period. I guess this is where I say I am really disappointed in the 2018 Halos season (aren't we all?) I was sort of pumped up this year and thought the Halos would have a very competitive team this year, liked the roster coming in -- was excited about Ohtani and all that he brings to the game/ team/ atmosphere --- and here we are heading into another September of meaningless games playing out the string with a bunch of AAA guys getting playing time.
  8. addition by subtraction. Rivera was once a pretty decent defensive catcher. not a bad pick up by Atlanta -- they can delay his arrival by a few days and he can report Sept. 1 when rosters expand. Rivera can be a defensive replacement and perhaps start Sunday games to give the Braves catchers a little end of the season break before the playoffs.
  9. Jerez -last night's Halos walk 'em pen guy - who sort of set up the opportunity for Jim Johnson to get the win (sort of a SLAM dunk)-- got shipped out to SLC today.
  10. Since this game means something in the NL West. Dogs are leading Texas right now but Jansen had another late inning implosion. should not cost the game this time, though. Dogs probably need to shut Jansen down for the season.
  11. Have the MLB PACE OF THE GAME committee folks watch a tape of the 8th inning. WALKS, PITCHING CHANGES. Nice (UGLY) win for the Halos. AWFUL Baseball. And folks wonder why ratings are down.
  12. If the Rockies win the West -- their round one opponent may sweep. If the Rockies nab one of the wild card spots -- they're likely ONE and DONE. Not the least bit impressed. This is among the NL's best? and they're going to play Houston, Cleveland, Boston or even Oakland???
  13. gotta like EY Jr. Hope he can make the roster and help the Halos next year.
  14. I like Bud Black - but if I'm Colorado GM -- I am shaking my head tonight. EY JR. deserves player of the game status - his AB turned it around.
  15. LIGHT UP THE HALO !!! a very improbable win. JIM JOHNSON's effectiveness out the pen gets him the WIN.
  16. would be great to see Ramirez have a one two three shut down inning . for Ohtani to even attempt to argue with the ump means it must have been a terrible call........I don't think I've ever seen Ohtani ever show any sign of arguing/ disrespect to any ump;
  17. were the Rockies out of pitchers? I do not understand Bud Black's pitching (non-moves) moves there. Rockies are in the thick of thing in NL West -- they need this game. I wouldn't have some reliever out there as it he's a mop up guy -------
  18. does JIM JOHNSON get the potential win here?? great. pitches to about three batters (was it two?) and gives up a GRAND SLAM for THE WIN !!!
  19. WALK --- What's Bud doing? this is an important game for Colorado???
  20. should be a round robin with the NL teams going into a loser's bracket -- double elimination like the little league world series.
  21. these guys may be the competition for Cleveland, Houston or Boston? don't think so.
  22. Bud Black is letting this guy mainly SINK or swim out there. not pen warming up I guess.
