  1. why trade Kendrick? contract issues? I know he could probably get us a decent rotation guy or a starter -- but I like Howie -- he's been great this year -- why trade him? because we can't sign him to an extension or something?
  2. well, it's Fenway -- not too many no hitters there..........
  3. just ended the 7th inning.........MLB channel will have it when he comes on for the 8th -- perhaps ESPN as well.
  4. I usually don't like our guys in the HR derby or our pitchers in the ASG at all....... one of the memorable HR derby performances was Josh Hamilton when he just crashed a while bunch of HRs -- something like 15 in Round One......but he was so tired out he didn't do so well in the second round....... I thought that when GA won it a few years back now -- that was good for the Halos and for GA -- who despite some stellar numbers over the years was never really given his due -- I think he won the HR derby that one year and then got the game winning hit in the game -- may have even been the MVP of the game........ I think the Halos profile (possibly due to the LOS ANGELES ANGELS name -- know some folks here who can't stand it when this issue comes up) is higher these days nationally and within MLB - but back then - the Anaheim Angels (still being called the California Angels by Joe Morgan) were not very prominently mentioned in MLB circles and with national baseball fans.......I think GA's performance in the HR derby and the ASG that year helped fans realize he was a good player and the Angels a pretty good franchise........so the HR derby was good for us that year.
  5. Phyz is on the KC radio broadcast with Steve Stewart (color commentator) talking about the KC Royals' signing of Raul Ibanez, apparently today. So he's back in KC. Wish him well.
  6. I find it amazing that the A's continue to win each year and consistently so when they play is what has to be now, the worst ballpark in MLB. the ballparks condemns them to being a small market team as they are unable to get decent attendance at that park -- even with a winning team. this lease extension is sort of sad because I am sure they had ZERO leverage with the City of Oakland which is not in the position to give much in the way of concessions to the team -- this sort of tells me the ownership has pretty much given up on getting a decent ballpark to play in and it's another ten years in that dump. yet the A's field competitive team each year. Amazing.
  7. Grilli used to start -- I assume he could be used as a spot starter/ fifth starter if necessary or is he well past that stage and now strictly a long relief pen guy?
  8. I don't know about Shoemaker as the closer -- and I didn't see tonight's game but Shoemaker's line looked terrible -- after a few very good starts. but this Grilli deal may allow Shoemaker to go to the pen in a set up/ pre set up role. I'd send Kohn back out.
  9. well, true -- (post above) but the time is now -- Sosh had lost confidence in Frieri and he wasn't going to do much for the Halos -- Frieri has a better chance of turning things around than Grilli but we could use some rotation help now and Grilli provides some, but not much, help in the area.
  10. 498 feet !! Wow -- that's Mickey Mantle territory ---
  11. geez -- that's embarrassing for the home plate ump --I'd keep Crisp out of the line up the next time that ump is behind the plate calling balls and strikes in an A's game.
  12. not a bad deal -- if Grilli can give the Halos some decent starts the rest of the way --if not, he fills the long relief role in the pen. meanwhile, Frieri back in the NL -- Frieri was a steal for us -- when we got him from San Diego he had just gotten lit up big time in his last several outings for the Padres and then moved over to the Halos where he pitched well in the pen -- came from almost nowhere to become the closer, had a good run, was an All-Star and the glass slippers stayed on for far longer than anyone expected. then the clock struck midnight in 2014 -- and so he's off to Pittsburgh -- hopefully he can have a resurgence there like he did when he first joined the Halos. meanwhile, we're not out anything and have a rental type fifth starter for the remainder of 2014.
  13. oh well, both named Alvarez........ perhaps this will lead to a discussion of CJ Wilson's defense at 1B and how many quality starts CJ Cron has this year.........
  14. "Hawk is good" -- I'm sorry -- just can't agree with that one -- he's awful. But to each his own...... hope the folks raking on Gubi aren't fans of Hawk.........GEEZ.
  15. oh well --- not the first time I've messed up..........won't be the last.
  16. Green played some 3B during ST and I thought he was OK........ When Freese came over I was very surprised at 1.) how slow he is on the base-paths and 2.) how weak defensively he is. Inside Pitch's post above seems to have Freese down spot on -- and, YES, his success in St. Louis (San Diego) becomes somewhat of a mystery......he has some punch in his bat and can and has delivered some clutch dingers.........particularly that one in the World Series a few years back -- but his slowness and constant threat of GIDP rally killing ABs and then his defense at third makes his continued presence in the Halos starting line up a questionable call....... not sure if Green is the answer - but, seriously, is he worse than Freese at 3B? Green's bat has some pop.
  17. nice to see a good guy back with the team and a guy who knows how to win........... this has to be a plus for the Halos........ nothing bad to say about his temporary replacement but Baylor is a no-nonsense guy with some real Halos history and also a player whose teams just seemed to win. At some point, the winning teams and Baylor's presence on them is no coincidence.
  18. thought the move to get Alvarez (for Romine) was a good one when we made it.......but like a lot of Halos deal, Alvarez very quickly wound up on the DL. still think it was a good move, Romine wasn't going to play here with McDonald (a good choice for the roster IMO) making the 25 man roster and Grant Green in the wings......and Romine is up with the big club and has gotten some playing time with Detroit -- which is good to say -- always liked Romine -- great glove -- he belongs on an MLB team and if it can't be with us -- he deserves the chance he's getting. Alvarez -- hopefully, now that he's activated he can show some of the promise that he showed with a few of his outings last year with Detroit -- he got a few starts last year.
  19. Pete Reiser of the Brooklyn Dodgers used to run into the wall -- didn't work too well at Wrigley where it's brick wall. Bobby Valentine got his spikes caught in the old chain link fence out there?? Is that what happened? I just remember him crumpling in CF and was never the same again. Folks forget, but before he got hurt, Valentine was a pretty good ballplayer........maybe some one can locate and post a link to that play --- I just remember Valentine going down hard. It was ugly.
  20. when Colbert says NO, he means YES. but I am not suggesting we pick up Capuano but some team will.........not a bad flyer for some one.......minor league deal -- a few outings in July and call up in August.
  21. the rankings they have at the end of the article are immediately suspect because they rank ChiSox team with Hawk Harrelson about 7th -- in the upper half.........how can that be?
  22. ah, I don't mind Gubi -- not sure why everyone rakes on him.........you want Hudler back? meanwhile, the solid, steady Terry Smith nary a mention.......oh well.
  23. he will be picked up quickly by someone......probably a minor league deal with someone and an August 1 or July 31 (to be eligible for post season play) for some team.
  24. I didn't think Green was that weak defensively at 3B but I could be wrong about that. I do know that Freese has been less than stellar -- but has made some good plays -- overall, though, not great and Mr. GIDP at the plate.
  25. Green made a real nice play / catch in LF in a game about a month ago.........
