  1. do we really have to debate this LA Angels thing some more...... I still think it was a great move by Arte and the marketing results show it. nice K there by Richards......he's gonna get this CG..........good stuff.
  2. I'd be watching Scully if I could get that broadcast.........
  3. gotta get this win tonight -- tomorrow its Santiago vs. KERSHAW........ and then we face Haren -- that should be fun........Haren's been awful in his recent starts......I can't remember his last good start.
  4. Puig has a lot of talent on the ball field........too bad he's got the attitude issue going and has about ZERO baseball instincts. guys like him tend to get cut loose as soon as they loose a step and lose some bat speed.......whereas some other guy with a good attitude and some baseball smarts would stick around another five years or so........
  5. no one is up in the pen -- looks like Sosh is going to let Richards start the ninth --- and now he's hitting!!! not sure if I agree with this --- oh well. If lead off guy (or anyone) gets on, Richards will likely be taken out -- but Sosh is going to give him a chance for the shutout CG.......I guess that's OK. I probably wouldn't do that and would go to Smith........
  6. Richards at 107 pitches -- if he can get this guy, I don't think he's coming out for the 9th.
  7. look at Trout's throw there and contrast that with Puig's dogging it letting Albert (of all people) take the extra base..... now. I realize Gordon -- a real speedster was on base -- but still
  8. Sully151 "Don't the fans already do that" (show class and indirectly provide a contrast between the two organizations). can't argue with you on that one..........
  9. on TV, Chavez Ravine looks pretty good tonight -- the improvements they made must have helped some..... I went to a lot of games at Dodger Stadium over the years -- a lot -- but haven't been there now in some ten years or so......... I have reached the point now where I'm sure I've been to more games in Anaheim than LA...... in fact, I've been to more SF Giants games in the past ten years than LA.
  10. would be nice for Halos to post the Scully returning for next season announcement on the jumbo-tron at Angels Stadium......it would show some real class.......and indirectly sort of provide a contrast between the two organizations.........
  11. Angelsfirst -- you must be getting the Dogs broadcast -- I guess some folks do get it........ wonder how many households that is -- most don't
  12. You could look it up as Casey Stengel would say -- Sosh is 31st on the list of all time manager wins........1299 (tonight, if the Halos hold the lead would be win number 1300 -- yeah, listened to Scully on the radio the first three innings -- old habits from way back die hard). Sosh has the second most wins amongst active MLB managers. Bruce Bochy is first with 1590 -- Bochy is 20th on the all time list. Bochy is one behind a guy with 1599 wins who is probably at the ballyard tonight -- Tommy Lasorda. Connie Mack, who managed the A's (the Philadelphia A's) for 53 years is first with 3,731 wins -- safe to say that record won't be broken.
  13. tonight would be Sosh's 1,300 win as a manager......... that's gotta place him up there on the all time list......not first or anything but perhaps in the top 40.
  14. well , Richards pitch count is at 89........Sosh will pull him no later than 105 or so.
  15. looks like a great night at the ballyard ----- and since it's Angels-Dodgers and the stands are about a third (or so) full of Red -- folks might actually stick around to the end of the game.
  16. LOL!!! Jeff Leonard -- they called him ol' Penitentiary Face when he was with the SF Giants..........!!
  17. this brings back the WTBS days when every Braves game was telecast on WTBS. fans of the Braves' opponents always knew they could see their team on TV when they played the Braves. this was back in the day (really, before ESPN carried many, if any, MLB games, before ESPN Sunday night and Monday night games) when there were very few national or local telecasts of games. The Braves were always on and they had pretty good viewership from baseball fans (like me) who would rather watch a baseball game than anything else that might have been on TV at the time. Dodgers fans may have a throw-back moment to those early TBS days this week when they get to see the Angels/ Dodgers games on TV on the Angels telecasts. Van Wieren was part of that long WTBS Braves run which lasted a long time........Skip Carey and Ernie Johnson were the 'big' names on those telecasts and the original poster is spot on-- Van Wieren did not care to draw attention to himself just did a steady job on the broadcasts. I really liked Ernie Johnson Sr.-- I kind of forgot he passed away but probably read about it at the time -- in fact, thinking about it now -- didn't he pass away suddenly during spring training -- I seem to recall he did his final game in an ST vs. the Washington Nats. I still recall watching the final WTBS TV broadcast (in terms of the every game schedule -- I'm sure they still have some Braves games on but it's not the same and have not watched one in years -- now) -- that's been a while back now and I seem to recall Ernie Johnson doing sort of historical retrospective of the Braves on WTBS.......Skip Carey had passed away by the time of that final broadcast but they showed clips of him -- and the others, Don Sutton -- I thought Sutton was OK. Daren Sutton is probably better.
  18. good trade still for both teams - and it wasn't a major trade then or now...... Bourjos -- a Halos player I always liked and will root for throughout his MLB career......wasn't going to play for the Halos. He's a defensive whiz on in CF and may be the best defensive OF'er (not taking into consideration his average to less than average throwing arm) in MLB.... Freese? We needed a 3B and got him in Freese even if Freese has been somewhat of a total disappointment with lesser than expected defense skills, slow a-foot and has earned the moniker, Mr. GIDP......but still, we needed a 3B and got one. Salas -- is he back down at SLC AAA now? I still think he's provided some pen depth and has come on lately, doing the role the Halos have asked of him. Grichuck? a throw in guy, been up with the Cards a bit but too old to be a prospect and is on the way to being a 4-A player. I think the trade was fair on both sides and might be disappointing on both side but then, not much was expected from these guys and they've delivered down to low expectations. I'd like to see Bourjos heat up and do well down the stretch.
  19. I think Cespedes is pretty good..........that throw he lade from the LF line vs. Halos was pretty impressive. his offensive stats speak for themselves......... I'd like Cespedes on our club !!
  20. looks like the A's also got a draft pick -- so deal not quite as lopsided...... I thought MLB teams couldn't trade draft picks like they do in the NBA and NFL....... oh well.
  21. Lackey may do well in St. Louis -- remember when Jeff Weaver got deal to St. Louis (after many thought he was through?) He won games in the playoffs and World Series and received a championship ring..... then he bolted the place that brought his career back to life and signed that huge deal with Seattle -- that didn't work out very well. Seattle broke out crying and was plain broke after the deal.......Jett Weaver was ineffective and his career on a downward spiral --- but he was anything but broke.
  22. So Cespedes is signed through 2015 - great deal for the BoSox -- they have a chance to extend Cespedes.......I really like his style of play.......he's a spark-plug, some power, speed, good field......good arm in the OF....... I really think this deal is a steal for the BoSox....... I agree with other posters who say this Cespedes trade will impact the chemistry in the A's clubhouse....... Lester and the other pitchers A's got recently (although Hammel has not done well for them) will really help them down the stretch but I think the Halos and the new pen depth we have may actually be the better (and cheaper) way to go........ for the Halos -- it means to get Lester as a two month rental we would have had to part with someone like Calhoun.........and a two month Lester is not worth that price IMO. Dodgers didn't get Lester, I'm convinced, because Kemp's contract is for much money for too long (through 2020? Something like that).
  23. haven't read all the posts here but Cespedes for Lester and Gomes is a pretty high price to pay for Lester as a two month rental. But A's need to win NOW although, they just completed that 10 year lease extension at the horrible (for baseball) ballpark where they are now playing......the Oakland Coliseum, home of the Raiders. Lester is likely to be back with the BoSox next year -- NO WAY, Oakland signs him. NO WAY. So you trade Cespedes for two months of Lester and then get Gomes who has some power but sure racks up the K's and his best defensive position is DH. This is a steal for the BoSox.........the Yankees should protest the trade.........
