  1. score update -- Winnipeg Jets 4, Anaheim Ducks 3 -- 3rd period about to start.
  2. Rose isn't going to be that great as a commentator but it sounds (reading between the lines on this) that FOX figures the new commissioner is going to re-instate Rose and then he'll be on the HOF ballot next year so this way they're essentially paying for a first interview exclusive on everything Pete Rose during his initial year before the HOF balloting and then if he gets IN, which, I have to believe he will - won't be a unanimous but I just can't imagine him not getting the 75% vote requirement.....then FOX has that exclusive........ if you've heard interviews or even seen commercials with Rose -- I don't think he's going to be very good as an analyst........ as a guy who has been watching baseball a long time, it seems to me that the game and the nature of the players playing the game has really changed in the past five to ten years with the change accelerating each year.........the MLB world that Pete Rose played in and was around no longer exists............it's sort of like a guy coming out of prison after a 20 year stint to suddenly see folks with I-phones, wireless devices, internet, etc. When you think about it, the world has really changed in the past 10 plus years......watch some movies or even some TV shows from that era (which does not seem that long ago) and the lack of cell phones / mobile devices is really noticeable dating the film --- it's really noticeable on old cable re-runs of shows still on the air like Law & Order SVU and the other Law & Order programs........how does Pete Rose relate to today's MLB player???????
  3. well, don't like to disappoint y'all -- but Pete Rose is likely a very lousy TV analyst/ commentator -- we'll see. I do agree that Pete Rose should be reinstated into MLB and should be made eligible for HOF ballot starting next year. he's the all time MLB hits leader for Pete's sake.......and despite his 'issues' which, quite frankly were NOT performance enhancing and actually seem less significant than some of the stuff we've seen in MLB since the time Rose was banned so many years ago, it's time to say he's served his sentence/ punishment and return him to the game before he's gone. whether you agree or disagree with reinstating Pete Rose and all that -- I don't think any one can deny that baseball fans of a certain age (dare I say 50 and above? perhaps a bit younger) remember when the correct way to play baseball was by emulating MR. HUSTLE -- Pete Rose -- all out -- ran to first base on walks, slid head first (back before it was deemed dangerous and stuff) and play all out every play trying any way to beat the opposition.........none of that play, none of his stats, none of his accomplishments on the field with one of the greatest teams of all time -- the Big Red Machine -- was impacted by the conduct that got him banned from baseball....
  4. hey Iannetta IN as a prior post notes.......sad state of situation when you have your second string DEFENSIVE catcher in the line up for a Sunday DAY game after a Saturday NIGHT game to give your regular a rest and then your regular needs to be inserted into the line up on SUNDAY's game (which is quickly slipping away, it seems, to become a rout) for DEFENSIVE purposes. Butera used to play for the Dodgers and has some MLB time in......don't we have any one else in the system that can come up and play some back up D at the catching position.... and don't say 'reacquire Mathis -- who, I think is currently on the DL in Miami ? is that where he is?) interference on this play....runner back to first or OUT? NO CALL?
  5. Cron either has a great swing (when he first came up for a September call up that first time his swing looked great) or a terrible one. his minor league career stats and his major league performance to date suggests he's very Dave Kingman like for those who remember the guy who played for a about ten MLB teams (most associated with the team he came up with -- the NY Mets) and hit something close to 450 career HRs with a career batting average about .225 and regularly hit the 150-plus strikeouts per season.
  6. Oakland always seems to have starting pitching.........Sonny Gray seems to have picked up where he left off last year --- at least that great start part of last season.
  7. did not see last night's game or even the highlights yet -- read about it in today's paper. but that goal sure seems a lot like the Kings late goal in the Kings-Ducks playoff series last year that tied the game (I think it was game two?) and pretty much gave the Kings momentum for the rest of the series and set the tone for the playoffs...... Winnipeg Jets are actually a pretty good team not to be taken lightly.......nice for the Ducks to have a 2-0 lead here. Vancouver- Calgary game at 7 PM this evening -- another good series.
  8. the "Lastros' trend by us was really bad TWO years ago when we literally missed making the playoffs because we had a horrendous 4-14 (something like that) record against Houston when the Oakland A's were something like 15-3 against them and Texas 14-4.........that's a 10/11 game swing within the division right there. last year we actually won the season series. can't say we're playing well today, though -- Richards performance is a positive -- our D is not.
  9. Mark68 -- OK...I didn't see the play --so let's talk just scoring here -- not necessarily related to this play. in this hypothetical, you have the same situation with two outs but now Richards K's the hitter and he reaches first after the ball is dropped or gets away from Butera (passed ball -- not ruled a wild pitch)...let's say catcher Butera makes a perfect throw to first base but the hitter is someone like Billy Hamilton of the Cincy Reds or eveh Chone Figgins in his prime with us -- a the batter beats the throw............ No E-2. A strikeout -- a passed ball (with two outs) and next guy rips a base hit that scores a runner.......earned run? It was the Passed Ball that led to the run but no error charged....... I think it's unearned........but -- again, no error ruled on this hypo.
  10. Yes sir. I just turned the game on when Freese had the 'non-play' no throw to second on the grounder to third so I missed Butera's errant throw that put the guy on first in the first place. and just because we're talking scoring here -- let's say Butera didn't make a bad throw but just dropped the third strike and/or it was ruled a passed ball (not wild pitch) and the batter/ runner beats (let's say for sake of argument --- a perfect throw)......would that change the earned run ruling on that -- no E-2 on the throw just a dropped third strike PB.......(with two outs)......I assume pitcher would NOT be charged with an earned run after that -- but perhaps.
  11. Freese frozen on throw to second???? run scores with two out and no throw at second for force out? single scored against Richards -- I'd almost be tempted to score that a fielder's choice -- you don't need an out to score a fielder's choice -- let's say Freese made the throw and it was late, guy safe -- scorer could score that a fielder's choice and not a hit. the fourth run that came across would still be earned, however, no does not make that big a difference on Richards' line/ stats.
  12. geez --c'mon Jeetz -- don't turn on the game (that has given you so much) like that.........
  13. God Bless America -- thanks for the post Nate........all is right with the world again. Well, at least on this issue. GEEZ -- you know, I even stop what I'm doing and take off my cap when I'm WATCHING THE GAME ON TV and they show the anthem being played (most times, they don't even show it) or God Bless American after the 7th inning.......
  14. not sure about this one --- I mean, I usually side with Arte on most things -- I can't believe this policy was run by him because there's NO WAY he would approve of this. I mean Arte and folks do realize that (at least for time being) the Angels play home games in ANAHEIM as in ORANGE COUNTY USA ? perhaps some of this may be related to the new transportation hub down there with the Metro link and train station???? otherwise, this directive makes no sense and not one you want to roll out in April when baseball is new again, every time (theoretically) has a chance --- there's never a good time to began/announce a policy like this but at the start of the season is just terrible........perhaps they could have waited until mid-June (6/14 is Flag Day).??? Nah. Watch Halos PR team save this debacle by having Arte ride to the rescue, some how blame the proposal on outside interests and have Arte 'rescue the flag' very publicly - not quite Rick Monday like but the verbal equivalence........
  15. thanks. sort of tough to watch the Cup playoffs (without the Kings being part of it all) but GEEZ -- but just watching the Vancouver-Calgary game tonight and the Blackhawks win over Nashville in double OT tonight to me is just a reminder why the Stanley Cup playoffs are just so much fun to watch and may be the best of all playoffs in pro sports..........just love this stuff -- and that's even without my team being part of it......... can't understand folks who think watching hockey on TV is boring -- and know a lot of folks who say just that -- IMO they're missing out.
  16. Calgary Flames, with Jonas Hiller in goal, beat the Canucks tonight 2-1 in Vancouver. Game winner scored with about 50 seconds left in the third period.................
  17. been away from the NHL and hockey threads for a while (since the loss to Calgary that was after that terrible loss to Edmonton. Yes, Edmonton). but wanted to drop in over here and wish the Ducks and their fans success in the playoffs........ I'm not one of those who because I'm a die-hard LA Kings fan, roots against the Ducks just because we're not in the playoffs. Success by the Ducks in the playoffs is good for S. Cal (in fact, all of California) hockey. Good luck to you guys.........
  18. rather actually watch some hockey than hear about/ read about/ listen to the excuses and now this Sutter lock out incident.........ah, drop the puck.........
  19. OK you guys going to (are watching) watch the Cup playoffs. Nashville-Chicago in a double over-time 3-3 game right now -- Crawford got pulled out of goal, I think in the first period. Vancouver leads Calgary 1-0 , third period at Vancouver. who's everyone rooting for? The Ducks? I'm for the Ducks and for Vancouver in the early going. Would like to see Blackhawks advance -- last year's Blackhawks-Kings Cup playoff series was one for the ages -- just a great 7 game series. Too bad we won't see another one this year.
  20. Angels need a new ballpark -- preferably one built right at the site of the current park -- but with the City of Anaheim that's likely not going to happen.......Arte and Anaheim at logger-heads over a lease extension..... I don't see that impasse being resolved any time soon. Could be wrong. Think Arte is looking elsewhere. Not a lot of options available but the loser (site) of the current 'bring the NFL back to LA" sites could be a possibility. at this point, I get the impression, Arte would rather move than give in an inch to the City of Anaheim.......even if the current site remains the best of the possible locations.
  21. Minnesota beat KC tonight. saw that play by Arenado last night -- incredible. and then he straightens right up and makes a solid throw to third...........great play.
  22. now watch us get shut out in Houston Friday night........feast or famine.........sounds like a song......oh well, can't always get what you want........
