I think a balanced lineup is best, generally. There are always exceptions, but a bunch of guys where the whole is better than the sum of their parts.
That being said, there isn't a magic formula.
Some guys are unpredictably funny (Robin Williams/Norm MacDonald). Some can make the predictable, funny (Jerry Seinfeld). And some are predictable in their humor and that's not funny to me (Mel Brooks).
That's just my opinion. Everyone has different ideas of what is funny.
