Foundations are created as a vehicle for philanthropy. Foundations are required to give away 10% of their assets every year. Rich people who want to benefit from "tax purposes" create Donor Advised Funds. DAFs are not required to distribute money on an annual basis.
Nonprofits exist to serve the greater good... Wounded Warriors, City of Hope, St. Jude Children's Hospital, PBS, museums, The Nature Conservancy, etc.
