when i think of free speech, i think of the ability to express an opinion without fear of prosecution, which seems germain to what the framers put together. the SCOTUS has helped refine the parameters of this by deciding you can't yell fire! in a crowded theater, etc. I can sit in front of my house with a sign that says "honk if you like trump" and be perfectly protected. if my sign says "honk if you want to assassinate trump", i can expect trouble from someone, maybe a legal issue or two to deal with as well as it could possibly constitute a threat. i'm not really sure how else to say it other than i have the liberty to express any opinion i want, but there can be repercussions depending on what i say or when i say it or who i say it to. is that still freedom of expression?

One thought I had was that Jefferson, Washington, et al were working to break free from an oppressive gov't as opposed to actively promoting slavery and racial oppression. There are plenty of layers to that idea, of course, but it wasn't to promote one race over another like the confederates were actively seeking. its an interesting and complex conversation to have and I'm interested to see what becomes of it.

i'm right on board with you on this, kevin. i don't like seeing the confederate flag flying over state capitols or incorporated into a state flag. put flags and statues in the appropriate places you've mentioned and i think that's a reasonable solution.

after all the bums we've run out there during the trout era, i'd have to believe he'd be ecstatic that the team is willing to make a commitment to get a guy like stanton. it says "we want to win now and for the foreseeable future." if you're trout, you have to like that kind of move.
