I think Payne Stewart's total of 1-under in 1999 is the best score so far at Pinehurst.

 

And they've lengthened the course to some 7,500 yards.

Kaymer's remarks after yesterday's round:

Amazing.

The sand rough isn't playing as hard as they thought it might. Lots of decent lies in there so far.

Nah is catching fire, just missed a putt go to -4...but he could go low today, he is only at 11.

This could get interesting. Kaymer is spraying tee shots, although he made a nice bogey with an unplayable on his last hole..

His lead is down to 5.

And.... he has missed another fairway.

 

And comes back from the rough to 10 ft and makes Eagle.

E for the day heading to 6.

Erik Compton is making a charge with four birdies in his last five holes. He's alone in second.

 

He's the one who had a heart transplant a few years ago.

NA sure has some game. I didn't realize he has been on tour for 10+ years.

I know the US Open is always ridiculously tough, but this has to be one of the most boring courses.  These greens are impossible.

Not much drama coming today, it appears. Kaymer just needs to grind out pars, and can actually absorb a couple bogeys.

He looks pretty solid so far.

Kaymer is landing shot after shot in the native area, and each time he manages to escape with a par (in one case, a bogey).

 

He's using the putter each time from way off the green.

 

 

edit: Another bogey, but Compton also misses his par. Five shot lead with 8 holes to go.

These greens blow. Asking a playing to hit a 245 yard shot into a crowned green that is designed to hold high shots is stupid and not an accurated test.
