What Angels player did you mimic as a kid?

Recommended Posts

Don Baylor and Doug DeCinces.

Non-Angels player, Rickey Henderson. I used to have some serious wheels before I hit the weight room and later on tore both my hamstrings (ruptured one).

On the mound I always threw like Goose Gossage, even as a starting.

My brother and I would play wiffle ball in the backyard, and we'd cut lineups out of the newspaper and would have to mimic each player in the lineup.  Batting stance, LH/RH, swing, everything.  So I mimicked quite a few growing up, but my favorite was always Wally Joyner.   Sweet swing that came naturally to me.  My brother always went after more outlandish swings that he could have fun with like Gary Sheffield and Jeff Bagwell.

Nolan Ryan, every day while I was throwing my tennis ball 'express' against the garage door. They were wooden then, and didn't make the racket that the hollow aluminum ones today do. One day my Uncle jokingly said that I looked like Nolie in my 5th grade school photo. I thought he was serious, and was never so proud.

When I wanted to hit for power, I'd emulate Brian Downing's exaggerated wide-open stance.  When I wanted to hit a liner to the opposite field, I'd sort of let my bat dangle until the last moment, a la Rod Carew (albeit a right-handed version).  Most of the time, I ended up doing a spot-on impersonation of Reggie Jackson drilling himself into the ground with a mighty swing and miss.  :)
