This really works against the Angels.  They simply don't have the international presence in Asia the way the Dodgers, Cubs, Mariners and Yanks do.  Dodgers probably won't bid too high on him, but it's a safe bet the Cubs and Yanks will.

It's fairly easy to envision a scenario in which the Angels, Yanks and Cubs all bid at the max (60 million, just throwing it out there) and Tanaka goes with the team he's more familiar with, which likely isn't the Angels.

Are people going to freak out and go batshit crazy if the Angels don't get Tanaka?  Seems like a lot of people on here (not necessarily in this thread specifically) are just sort of assuming that the plan all along has been to get him.  I have a feeling that the chances of actually signing him are extremely slim.

Unless you've read this from an official news source I'd be very hesitant in pondering Tanaka's familiarity with American baseball teams and players. The Japanese are rabid baseball fans and of course the casual fan over there is a little bit likely to know less about our teams than Japanese teams but I'm sure the players are pretty familiar with most U.S. teams and players, especially someone like Albert Pujols and Mike Trout. I wouldn't underestimate our draw power.

Friends who moved here from foreign countries and had never watched a baseball game knew who the Yankees were.

MLB Posting System Proposal Includes Maximum Bid

By Aaron Steen [December 3 at 4:49pm CST]

4:50pm: NPB officials are amenable to the idea of a maximum bid, but not the amount which MLB has proposed, according to a Japanese report passed on by Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker (Twitter link). Major League officials are trying to impose a $20MM limit.

20 million?? Half the league will bid the max for him.

LOL -- people are mad - but this is good for baseball and follows suit with what they have been doing with the draft, the international market and every other area where teams used to be able to use money to gain an advantage.

This started years ago with the end of the the draft and follow process.

20 million is too low.  But 50 million might be too high.

Consider.

Darvish $51.7 million, second place around $17 million

Matsuzaka $51.1 million, second place was around $40 million

Up until Matsuzaka, the next highest bid was $13 million for Ichiro

They should put it at $30 million max, with a $5 million minimum.  Remember that Tanaka isn't the only one that will be posted.  So the posting rules that they put in place should be a benefit for all NPB teams, not just the one with the biggest star.

Couldn't they do something like make it a higher limit, but that about half of the posting fee goes against the Luxury Tax? Or maybe take half of the posting fee and spread it out over the length of the contract and consider that against the Luxury Tax. So if the limit is $50 Million and you sign the guy for five years at $10 million a year, it will actually be a $15 million hit against the luxury tax?

problem is, there is no luxury tax.  But I digress.  The Competitive Balance Tax is part of the CBA, so any changes would have to be negotiated with the union.
