Hot Stove Trade Speculation: Everyone Dreams of a Three Way

Recommended Posts

So we give up the least amount of talent, yet get the most in return?

Sweet!

If you call giving up four Major League players the least amount of talent, then yes your statement would be correct. Prospects are never a sure thing, you know that! Maikel Franco could become Brandon Wood 2.0? Stroman was busted for PED use which is an added risk if he reuses and is out a number of games?

There are risks in this trade that I don't think you appreciate?

I'd go Melanie Iglesias and a long time ago back in the start of the GC we did a rate and I posted up a chick that I don't remember the name but was from OC and the pic we all dug was her on her knees on a bed with a green shirt on....that ironically looks like Melanie. I think she would be #1 on the GC from back in the day.

I meant to say "most" as in "most overall", not necessarily "most talent" but I can see how that could be construed from what I said.

Still, this trade proposal absolutely favors the Angels and completely rips the Jays. Their GM is smarter than that.

I would be the first to say that it is probably the fact that the Jays would have to give up their top two pitching prospects that would probably make this deal a no-go. However the Blue Jays also made a commitment to try and win last season and they are still in that window of contention which would make them consider deals that they may not normally pursue.

Thanks for your input tdawg!

Editors Note: I caught two errors I made on Mark Trumbo and Tommy Hanson's salaries for 2014 in the spreadsheet. Trumbo's was listed at $2 million but it is actually going to be about $4.7 million. Hanson was listed at $8.5 million and it should have been $3.9 million. This is not to big of a deal as the Phillies would have to send a little less money but I wanted to mention it here for clarity's sake.

The pitfalls of not initially linking your Excel spreadsheet cells.

I think the Jays will be sellers this offseason.  They spent $36 million more in salary from the previous year, and finished in last place in their division.   They will not trade their young talent, but instead look for teams to take their big contracts.

I can really see a Buerhle for Iannetta straight up trade.  It sheds $20+ million payroll from the Jays for the next 2 years, and gives them an affordable catcher.  And for the Angels, it gives them a starting pitcher that has a track record for IP, and his whip is would place him as a #3 type pitcher.  And if you say what about the money, then all these trade porn talks are fruitless because that means the Angels don't mean to compete next season.  No one will trade the Angels affordable young starting pitching for castoffs and soon to be expensive arbitration players.

This was well thought out...starting with the title. Good job ettin.

Now, I also have concerns that the Jays wouldn't be getting enough back. The major pieces of this trade would be Lee, Kendrick, Trumbo, and Janssen. I wonder if it makes more sense for Lee to go to the Jays and Sanchez to come to the Angels? Then the Phillies might not have to eat so much of Lee's salary. Maybe take Wright out of the equation. Might this work?

That would probably work itself out also. The only concern would then be is Stroman and Sanchez enough depth for 2014. They certainly are good prospects and Stroman could be in the rotation in 2015 (maybe Sanchez too). There is a balance to be found somewhere in that idea.

Stroman, possibly. Sanchez, probably not until 2015 or 2016 (but he's got a good chance at being at least a #2). We're probably going to have to find short-term options for the next couple years, anyway, but having a guy like Janssen at the back end of the bullpen really helps the end game.
