I don't think it matters if it is intentional or not, isn't obstruction of any type not permitted when the fielder isn't trying to make the play?

"OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.

Rule book is silent on the topic of intent.

Intent does not factor into the rule. But he did lift his legs and then look at the runner. I actually think the intent was there. Ump at third pointed immediately and Joyce backed him up. I am a tad surprised they actually made the call. Redfux have no grounds for complaint, they got,cll reversed in game one.

Intent is a non-factor in that play. You can see Middlebrooks try to get up (that's when his feet went up, you can see him try to push himself up at the same time). He really couldn't get out of the way, but the umps got it right.

Saltalamacchia should have just held onto the ball once he took the throw from Pedroia and made the tag. If Salty hangs onto the ball, the Cards have first and third, but two outs.

However, in the top of the ninth, Farrell screwed up by having Workman hit for himself and leaving Napoli on the bench. You can't let a guy make his first ever plate appearance as a professional in the 9th inning of a World Series game. Especially because Workman ended up getting yanked after two hitters (and one out) in the bottom of the ninth. He would have been better served by having Napoli pinch hit, and having Uehara start with a clean 9th (whether Napoli gets a hit or not).
