This is a great game.

 

I'm not really a fan of this new format because of 1 game elimination, but it's hard to not root for a team like the Pirates who had 2 decades of losing seasons and 20 years of no playoffs games.

 

Especially after watching the lethargic way our team has played for the past 4 years.

Morneau hasn't done anything offensively for the Bucs (.681 OPS) Gabby Sanchez was actually putting up better numbers. Although, they didn't give up anything significant, so I guess that trade was pretty much a wash.

I must admit I don't watch a lot of Pirates games. That is a pretty nice looking stadium. I love how the fans in the outfield are right on top of the action.

Nice evening for Russell Martin - I liked the guy when he was with the Dodgers.

 

Couldn't figure out why they let him go and then the Yankees did as well.

 

Martin's pretty good D behind the plate (not quite Yadier Molina, but good).

 

His hitting has always been streaky --- had 2 HRs tonight.........but he can go into prolonged offensive slumps.

I have actually wondered why with Mike Scioscia being so adamant about his catchers why the Angels wouldn't have picked him up if not only for his defense but his experience behind the plate. Feels like a missed opportunity, he's good enough and played with good teams, and might even be able to help develop a pitching staff.

 

Clearly we have been missing that for the past 4 years.

 

Either way, I would take him over Iannettta any day, but keep Conger.

Should be a great series...was a pretty even series in the regular season.  I believe home field advantage tips in the Cards favor and the Cards will only see Liriano once.
