I was just about to post the same thing.  I've been on the (very small) anti-Vargas bandwagon for a while now.  Wonder if others will jump onboard?  I think someone is going to vastly overpay for him--and I hope it's not us.

Now I'm starting to think that trading for a young starter (HK for Zach Lee?) and signing Tanaka is the way to go.

Vargas has now had back-to-back clunkers.   Can't blame the blood clot surgery anymore, he's been back for almost a month.   He's looking more like a #5, and you don't pay #5's $10 million/season. 

Save that money to sign Tanaka.

His performance of late is a bit of cause for concern.  

 

last 7 starts:  37.1 IP, 5.54 ERA, 1.634 WHIP.  Opponents putting up a .321/.376/.487 slash against him.  oof

 

Given his history I still like him as an innings eater #5 type, but I really hope they don't overpay.

For me, re-signing Vargas depends on what other moves the Angels make.  As long as Vargas isn't being counted on as a middle-of-the-rotation guy, and assuming we could get him on a club-friendly deal, I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing him.  If he is, or is supposed to be, our 3rd best starter next year, then we're in serious trouble.

I wouldn't re-sign Vargas even as a #5. His trajectory is going the wrong way and I could see him putting up a 5+ ERA next year.

No way! Even before his last two starts, I wasn't a fan of re-signing him. He has a higher WHIP than Williams and he's terrible on the road.
