Another proof that Iannetta is horrible on defense

This is from fangraphs article on pitchers and catchers ability to stop the running game and surprise Ianetta comes out last.

He was also shown as one of the worst pitch framers in baseball as well.

The pitch framing I already knew about and that was the reason I posted that Blind Player Pick thing the other day. If Iannetta can be traded before next season and if we can find a decent back up to Conger I'd be okay with that scenario.

There is a possibility that Iannetta has been playing hurt: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/mash-report-9313/ (see bottom list)

However, I still feel that Chris' only contribution is his OBP. His catching ability is certainly in question. The Angels will really need to evaluate Iannetta and determine his health and worth before next season.

Dipoto is the Bad luck Brian of GMs.

Chat wood pitched like dog crap while with the angels. Then again, butcher?

I wouldn't say Chatwood was crap when he was here. If I remember he started pretty well, something like 9-3 with a high 3 ERA his first half season. His whip was high though. He was young, like 21 when he was with the angels. I wish we had him pitching and hitting cleanup this year.

the staff doesn't hold runners well.  That said, Hank appears to have done a better job at stopping the run.

Hank is better at framing and calling pitches.  They are both similar offensively.  Hank the better hitter, Chris with better discipline.

Hank is younger and has a chance to improve as well so the decision is obvious.

Any catcher is going to look better when you remove hansen, blanton ,and williams from the rotation.

Hanson is on his own level when it comes to how terrible he is at holding runners.

His stupid cock on his delivery allows any decent runner to easily steal on him at will.

To be fair to Iannetta, the study found that pitchers were vastly more important in their contributions to 'catcher defense' than the catcher himself is. At the same time Tommy Hansen and Joe Blanton were two of the worst rated pitchers in the study, and Hank Conger did make the 'worst' list as well.

It would appear that Iannetta being rated worse is something of a perfect storm. He has had a terrible pitching staff to work with, and he has not been able to do much on his own to help it.
