WTF is with this bleeping weather?

Recommended Posts

Snow level in the Central Sierra is expect to drop below 2000' this week.

Skiers should have some great holiday weeks for a change.

I'll wait until after New Years myself.

Edit: Neighbor's rain gauge recorded 2.43 in between midnight and midnight yesterday (the winter solstice)

.DISCUSSION...
WINTER STORM HITTING THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA INTERIOR WITH VERY
IMPRESSIVE PRECIPITATION TOTALS SO FAR THIS MORNING. WHILE THE
HIGHEST AMOUNTS HAVE OCCURRED OVER THE SIERRA NEVADA AND
FOOTHILLS ...VALLEY RAIN NORTH OF KERN COUNTY HAVE BEEN SIZABLE.
IN THE LAST 24 HOURS...THE YOSEMITE VALLEY AND SURROUNDING AREAS
RECEIVED OVER THREE INCHES OF WATER. MANY MOUNTAINOUS LOCATIONS
HAVE BEEN AVERAGING HOURS RAIN RATES BETWEEN A TENTH TO ALMOST A
QUARTER OF AN INCH PER HOUR. DOPPLER RADAR WIND PROFILER DATA
SHOWING A VERY STRONG WEST-NORTHWESTERLY FLOW THAT HAS FAVORED THE
EAST-SIDE OF THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY AND MOUNTAINOUS AREAS EAST OF
THE VALLEY. THEREFORE...HIGHER AMOUNTS OF RAIN AND HEAVY SNOW WILL
BE OBSERVED FOR MOST OF THE DAY THIS TUESDAY.

Now that the drought is easing from central California on up, feel free to send some of it down here too.

It's crazy that in an El Nino year, the precipitation is happening there, but not in SoCal aside from 0.1 inch here and 0.1 inch there.

The SoCal mountains still need snowpack too.   The SoCal mountain lakes are fast becoming ponds.

2 inches in a lake the size of Tahoe is a... lot o' f'n water..

So far 2015 is livin up to the hype.

We've started out strong and finished weak before though, and recently..so it aint over till its over, but it's looking good.

It is going to snow down low the next few days..if it continues to slide south you guys might see snow on Saddleback.

I've made snowmen up near the candy store on Ortega Hwy...which is always a neat experience in the OC.

Last Winter's First Snow Survey Had Trouble Finding Snow

December 2015 - SACRAMENTO – The Department of Water Resources (DWR) will conduct this winter’s first manual snow survey on December 30 at Phillips Station off Highway 50 near Sierra-at-Tahoe Road approximately 90 miles east of Sacramento.

Electronic readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack today show its statewide water content is 9.3 inches, 112 percent of the December 23 average. (See list at the end of this advisory showing the statewide snow water equivalents on or about January 1 from 2002 through 2015.)

The Phillips snow course is one of dozens that will be measured during a 10-day window around January 1 to determine the water content of the snowpack, which normally contributes about 30 percent of California’s water when it melts.

Last winter was remarkably warm; the average minimum temperature in the Sierra Nevada was 32.1 degrees Fahrenheit, the first time this value was higher than water’s freezing point since record-keeping began. On January 1, 2015, the water content of the snowpack was 47 percent of that date’s statewide historical average.

Below-normal precipitation and warm temperatures throughout the winter months combined to create a historically meager snowpack last winter, according to DWR’s records. The snowpack at the start of February and March was only 23 percent and 19 percent of average respectively on those dates. By April 1, when the snowpack normally is at its peak, electronic readings showed the snowpack’s water content was only 5 percent of normal for that date, the lowest on record.

Although the snowpack’s water equivalent this year is slightly above the historical average for late December, DWR’s drought managers say precipitation would have to be much greater than normal to have a significant effect on California’s drought, which now is three months into its fifth consecutive year.

When I was in high school we threw or snowboards in the back of my buddy's truck and drove to the top of saddleback for a half day of riding. The snow wasn't that bad but around 1:00 it started to deteriorate rapidly.
