That is cool.  It is snowing pretty hard here, I can't imagine on the east coast with another storm running into it.

The people I work with in PA, CT and NJ are freaking out quite a bit, especially the ones that were in Hurricane Sandy's path.

Weird subtropical low moving over right now making it warm and humid. I was hoping the Sierra's would be getting some good snow out of this but snow levels are at 7,000+, and not really a big snow-maker. Hoping to get a few snow days before the end of season, but who knows how that's going to be.

That's the other thing this FOUR year drought has damaged: the skiing/tourism industry at the local slopes.

This is for AO

"To better fulfill the dual mandates of preventing floods and supplying water, Lake Mendocino's managers need relief from a pre-Sputnik matrix that dictates water levels without regard to modern science," the editors said.

We need the National Weather Office to say: 'Yes, we can give you 5-7 days notice.' It's a big issue that it's trying to resolve."

What? They don't have Weather.com, or Accuweather.com or the interwebs?  Even AO can look at the 10 day forcast, and say hey, there is some rain coming, let's prepare.  And 5-7 days out, look at see that the rain might really be coming, so lets take some steps to relieve the water level.  Or in AO's case, complain that there isn't enough rain that will impact the water levels.

The big blizzard in NY was a bust, it turns out. De Blasio is taking heat for shutting the city down.

I don't like him, but he probably did the right thing in view of the dire forecast. Once again, we see that meteorology is not an exact science.

WHAT?  The climate models aren't correct?

Looks like the California drought is worsening. San Francisco reported no measurable rainfall in January, the first time that's happened since records began in 1850. It's no better for southern California. The "Resilient Ridge" is firmly in place.

This should inspire another AO weather rant.

on the nbc nightly news tonight they said in illinois this year, 13 people have died while shoveling snow in their driveways.

Happens all the time out here, especially older folks that have heart issues. It's tricky, because the cold makes you feel like you're not working that hard, but it's really a pretty draining physical activity.
