it's finally been cool enough at night that we can open the windows and turn off the air con. my wallet appreciates it.

They said the storm on Sunday in the San Gabriel mountains was a "once in 500 years" event. Four inches of rain in one hour. Massive flooding.

 

We had a storm like that here in 1999. What is normally a year's worth of rain fell in an hour. I was working in an outpatient mental health facility, and we moved furniture to other rooms when the water started coming in. We were on the verge of evacuating the facility when the flood water began to recede. A fire truck drove down the street in front of the building and the water was about halfway up the side of the truck. Haven't seen anything like that before or since.

Latest on the El Nino formation = still on track to form for November 2014 through winter, but not as strong as thought a few months back. 

Normal to slightly above normal rainfall is the current projection for that period of time.

Drought has to end soon anyway after 3 years of only 16 total inches of rain (just over 1/3 of normal).

The humidity finally kicked in over here this week. When you walk outside it takes a few minutes to defog your glasses. On the plus side the temps have been topping out around 110.

More wizardry from the National Weather Service: Zero percent chance of rain - but we're under a flash flood watch. I guess that the flood water is being trucked in.

Absolutely poured last night. A heavy thunderstorm rolled through about midnight with high wind. It blew over the hose reel in the back yard, which I didn't think was possible. Haven't seen that much lightning before in the entire time I've lived here.

Reason #893 that I love the Midwest. Total downpour on a bar patio tonight. Lightning strikes within three blocks. Everyone just stays outside and accepts it.

Thunderstorms are one thing I miss about living in the south - that, and just rain in general.

 

That said - my sister says that it has been 100 degrees the last two days in Jacksonville. Here, no big deal. There, you're usually talking about 80-90% humidity. Has to be brutal.

Incredible sunset last night from the upper-deck ramp of Angel Stadium. I got to the game a little late and watched the Sun go down. Beautiful clear, dry evening.

everyone in glendale got a robo-call yesterday telling us that today was going to be a day of high demand on energy, and that we need to back off on water and appliance use this afternoon from 1:00-5:00.

 

never had this happen before.

 

and to any of you doing the ice bucket challenge, if you have to do it, please do it over your lawn instead of a driveway or sidewalk. better just to write a check and not do the challenge at all.
