If they let Deng go, they can stretch his salary out over 5 years, and thus free up some $11 million in cap space for each of the next two seasons, although losing some $7 million against the cap in each of seasons 3-5.

holy cow, what a bad contract.

Yep, Deng signed for 4 years/$72 million.  Along with Mozgov for 4 years/$64 million, two of Asleep At The Switch Mitch Dupedchak's last and horrible acquisitions

At least Brook Lopez and his bad rebounding/defense was only here for one season for a small salary.

Pelinka >>>>>>>> Asleep At the Switch Mitch.

Kudos to the Spurs on getting DeRozan in the deal who personality wise seems like a good fit for them.  Apparently Toronto isn't somewhere Leonard wanted to go:

I believe DeRozan was frustrated in Toronto so this is the Raptors taking a chance but seems real risky unless they can convince Leonard to stay long term.

Definitely cold, but it's a great city. A lot of players like it. I hate the cold, but I'd rather be in Toronto than OKC for sure.

On Mason and Ireland 2 days ago, Ireland and Thompson were discussing why Leonard wanted to come to the Lakers. They said he wanted to gain exposure in China and wanted a good shoe deal. Toronto has a huge Chinese population. While it's no sure thing he stays there, Toronto isn't as bad a destination as it seems on first glance.

Great news.  Kawhi is going to be tough to persuade to sign there, at least if you believe reports he doesn't want to go there at all.  Now, we should have the entire year to test drive Lebron with the youngsters, let them learn to play together and grow, and figure how Kawhi would fit.  Also, gives Kawhi the ability to prove he's healthy.  Sign him next Summer and add to the growing assets on the team.

What an amazing 12 months we have to look forward to.  Watch Lebron run the floor in P&G.  Watch Ingram, Lonzo, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Svi, Wagner and Zubac grow and take us to a competitive level we haven't been to in years.  Be entertained by winning and not just moral victories.  And then....

In 12 months, we can stretch Luol Deng's contract and have $36+ million to spend in free agency.  That means we can sign Kawhi Leonard next summer without having to trade Deng AND still have nearly 4 million remaining.  Left column is roster after stretching Deng.

If we trade Deng along with our #25ish 1st round pick (and maybe a 2nd), we'll have roughly $12 million to add another free agent AFTER signing Kawhi Leonard, PLUS the Mid-level room exception of nearly $5 million.  Right column is trading Deng.

If I had my perfect scenario, we would trade Lonzo to Indiana for center Myles Turner.  Then, sign Randle at $9,000,000 and Rondo at the remaining $3,000,000 plus the value of the last 2 minimum spots, roughly $5,000,000 total.  Still leaves the Mid-level exception of nearly $5,000,000.

Starting lineup:  Hart, Kawhi, Ingram, Lebron, Turner

2nd unit:  Rondo, Svi, Kuzma, Randle, Wagner + mid-level signee (sniper or rim protector?)

Annnnndddd.......the Lakers work out a waive/stretch with Luol Deng.  Deng will give back nearly $8 million of his salary.  We're on the hook, I believe, for his entire salary against the cap this upcoming season.  Probably stretch next years remaining money over 3 years ($15ish million over 3 years).  We now have enough cap space next season for a FULL FA MAX (Leonard?) and another $4-5 million for another FA, plus the nearly $5 million Room exception.  Another good day to be a Lakers fan!  Magic and Rob are gods.

Other nice angles after this move:

1.  Don't have to worry about losing any draft choices in upcoming years.  This is terrific news considering how well the FO has done selecting value late in drafts recently.

2.  Don't have to worry about trading our youth for a free-agent-to-be.  Without Deng's salary to help match, it's unlikely we'd be involved in something like that later this season.
