Dipoto had a choice between Liriano and Blanton last offseason

Recommended Posts

Liriano would not be this good in the AL and he pitches in an extreme pitchers park.

Liriano 2012: 6-12, 5.34 ERA, 9.5 K/9, 5.0 BB/9!!!!, 12% Fb/HR, 43% ground all rate.

Basically he was a combination of cj Wilson and Ervin santana last year. Home run pitcher giving up a ton of walks and nibbling. Francisco Wiltana

All this stuff about how Liriano would not have been better with the Angels isn't the point.  Blanton is the worst pitcher is baseball.  ANYBODY would have been a better signing than him.

The thing is, Liriano was one of the worst pitchers in baseball in 2009, 2011, and 2012. Blanton was actually better in that same span (seriously). There was absolutely no indication whatsoever that Liriano would pitch like he did in 2006 or even 2010.

Neither of these pitchers should have been an option. After moving on from Greinke they should have gone all-out for Sanchez, not Josh ****ing Hamilton. The choice between Liriano and Blanton was a wash. More than likely you end up with a shitty pitcher. Should Dipoto have given Liriano a 1/1 contract instead of the joke of a contract he gave Blanton? Looking at it now, absolutely. But the choice should have never even come between the two of them, and honestly, I don't think it did. Dipoto just signed Blanton for whatever god forsaken reason and hoped for the best.

The reaction here probably would have been worse if the Angels signed Liriano. It may have ultimately been a better signing but absolutely no one could have known that ahead of time.

Liriano: 2.53 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 126 strikeouts in 121 innings

Blanton: 6.03 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 104 strikeouts in 128.1 innings

Liriano signed for 1 year/1 million with an 8 million dollar TEAM option for 2014.

Blanton signed for 2 year/15 million with a 2015 team option for 8 million or a 1 million dollar buyout.

Wow.

Granted, Liriano would not be this good with the Angels because Butcher, but still. Inept decision making by this organization.

and you knew Liriano wanted to sign with the Angels how?
