Angels Official Website: Pujols isn't giving up on returning this season

Recommended Posts

So some scenarios I see happening.

He comes back.  It feels great.  Then next season it flares up again.

He comes back.  It hurts.  Then he finally has surgery, and we miss him for the first half of the season.

He doesn't come back.  he doesn't have surgery.  Then next season it flares up again.

God miraculously cures him.

Did any of you read the article?

The next day, he went back to Southern California for an MRI exam that confirmed the partial tear and put his season in jeopardy. And on Monday, he saw a foot specialist who said, in Pujols' words: "Congratulations, you just did the surgery yourself."

Another bit of good news is that Pujols will probably never have to deal with plantar fasciitis on his left foot again (he's never had it in his right one). While in the boot, the 33-year-old can lift weights and do swimming exercises in the pool.

He doesn't need surgery because the tear did what the surgery would do. So, it's not like he's hoping some voodoo will take care of him and he won't need surgery. Also, it means he probably will never deal with the plantar fasciitis in the left foot again. So, if he's feeling able and there's not a further risk for him, shouldn't he be out there earning his money? Isn't that less selfish. Where in all this does it seem to be he's putting stats above the team?

That's fine, as long as he lets it heal and rehabs it properly, but what's the rush?

Exactly.  I'm not superstitious but the Angels seem to have a problem with people making it back from the DL on time.  No need for him to rush this.

He wants to play this year. Though he added he’s “not going to rush anything. I’m going to let it heal, take the time that the doctor is saying that I have to take, because obviously they have more experience in that than myself.”

There is no rush. He's hoping he can come back, good for him. AS was quoted in another thread, at the same time, he's letting the medical staff tell him when he actually can which is in all likelihood not this season.

I love how everyone went off half cocked on Pujols for "not giving up on returning this season"

I'm guessing if the report had been the same but Pujols said, "I could play without pain or the possibility of further injury, but instead I'm going to be cautious and take the rest of the season off" that there would be quite a bit of finger pointing and name calling.

So, he should make sure he is fit to play, but then, I'd love to see him play and get in a grove. It won't change the season but it may help him keep a groove.

I highly doubt that, but who knows?

I, and most people, don't care about this season, and don't give a flying leap about his personal numbers.  We have this nag for 8 more years, so better he be healthy in 2014.  The more he plays in 2013, the more chance that he could break something else, or something falls off his old body.

I agree with Michifan. If he's fine, why shouldn't he play no matter where the team is in the standings? I don't understand the vitriol.

Some people are under the impression that he's only about personal numbers, despite an entire career saying otherwise, and, honestly, he's making a lot of money and, gosh darnit, they just don't like him.

You guys claiming he just wants to pad his stats are pathetic. The guy wants to play baseball, but he will only play if he is healthy, what is the harm in that? I know the harm, you feel like you have been cheated because the guy hasn't played well or been healthy, because of that you hate him and want to turn him into a villain. Poor you.
