Maybe I am misreading people (not just on this board but including personal conversations with people talking about the Angels) but it sure seems like people are just against using free agency altogether because of some poor past decisions, and I think that would be a big mistake.

probably because this team has been way too burned by way too many free agent signings over recent years - either they're too expensive with not near enough return, or they just plain suck. 

it's a catch 22, honestly. we need to improve the depth and talent on the roster, but finding the right guys at the right price is such a delicate balance.

Overall, free agency tends to be the worst way to ever supplement a team. Most players reach the open market for a reason…they’re getting to a point where they’re too expensive for the value they provide or they have too much uncertainty in their future performance. 

That doesn’t mean it’s not useful or should be avoided, but it really isn’t ever the best way to build a team, especially when that team is lacking the necessary counter-balance - a strong farm.
