A narrative: Arte got a taste of being a top tier team in 2004-09, tried to continue it by buying a perennial contender, failed, assessed the books, and decided he'd rather focus on optimizing profit, cutting corners in ways that lead to long-term success - like farm development, scouting, etc. He prioritized hiring Yes Men over baseball IQ. 

The glimmer of hope is that of the last four GMs going back Reagins, Minasian is the most promising. He doesn't wow me, but he's made enough goodish moves that the situation isn't absolutely hopeless. The other glimmer is that while the potential downside is poor spending, Arte is willing to spend. We just have to hope that Perry can guide him in the right direction.

1986, game 4 of the ALCS ==> 2002, game 1 of the ALDS was 16 years, so we've seen this story before.

if you really want to go hardcore on the streak thing, their first playoff appearance in 1979 was during their 19th season from inception.

However back then, there was only 2 playoff teams in each league.  The last 15 seasons, there's been 4 spots, with the last few seasons being 6, which makes it even more of a fail.

I was at that Game in 1986 (actually Game 4) with my brother. We chased Clemens in the 9th and won it in extras.  Then the roof caved in the next day.

Yeah but back in those days only two AL teams made the playoffs. Now there's 6 slots.
