Their best shot at being able to attract FA's (other than overpaying), is to hope they get the two hurt guys back around the time they sell off and then play .500 ball (or close to it) to finish the year while the ouchie boys look like they can still play.

In five years, maximum ten, this team will be competing for a playoff spot. Arte will hopefully be gone by then. In the meantime, endure the pain.

i'm glad burnes said this outloud.

frequently overlooked on this board is what a player wants. "arte sucks! why didn't he sign xxx?!?" The halos are a team that is avoided by players who want to win. That won't change until the kids start to gel and become a competitive team all year long. Anyone who signs here is either looking for a big payday (with low expectations to win) or one last chance to play major league ball.

This attitude has been typical of most good players. In all sports. More prestige, gratification and financial opportunities with a winning  team. And more day to day fun in a winning environment.

Reggie Jackson for instance came close to signing with the Expos at one point but rather than be part of a young talented emerging team he chose the big market. For less money!

But the money equation always comes into play with specific individuals who may prioritize it above other factors.

Going to an average team rather than a clearly bad team narrows the choices even more. An average team can realistically become a good team in a shorter time span. A bad team means more time, roster changes, rebuilding and so on.

The player choosing a bad team with little hope of a quick rebuild must have to really be enticed by money and/or love the location, have family or other personal reasons.

The question Moreno needs to answer:

Why don’t you prioritize the farm system and building a strong contending team going forward?    You’ve had NINE years of losing to start doing that.

He keeps reading these books but doesn't understand that he can change the ending by making different choices.

Dollar amounts can change everything. Honestly, Burnes is under contract with the team, and I doubt he'll mention anything about free agency until after the season. However, given his past remarks as a Brewer, he's likely to test free agency when the time comes.

he'll be expensive, and there will probably be a lot of competitive bidding for him.

but guys like him want to win, too. he's been in the playoffs a couple of times with milwaukee and will get there again with baltimore this fall. i can't imagine the angels would remotely be an attractive option for him.

I disagree that they should even entertain the idea of signing a 30 year old pitcher to a big contract with the current roster.

This organization must learn to properly draft and develop talent.

Until this is done, these types of signings will continue to be likely disasters and more importantly not move the W-L record enough to justify the signing.

But we're just one big splash away from contention!
