Since other people seem to be misunderstanding your post and offering new nicknames for him rather than explaining "Big Poppa," I'll step in.  It's the title of a Notorious B.I.G. song that he uses as his walk-up song.

I thought they said something on the broadcast about him having a discussion of the nickname with his father. Something about he hadn't earned the moniker yet because of his suckage. Since he's been hitting better, his father validated its use.

You're right about the conversation with his dad, but it stemmed from the fact that he used the song as his walk-up song.
