Why is an Angel draftee playing in Australia and not an Angels minor league team?

He's not playing there now.  He'll play in the off-season.  It's the equivalent of a prospect playing in the Dominican Winter League, etc.

"Because the ABL's season takes place from November to February, the ABL is one of baseball's recognised winter leagues (although it is summer in Australia when the season takes place), where minor-league prospects in North America are often assigned as an English-speaking alternative to the primary Spanish-speaking Latin America-based winter leagues. Thanks, that clears that up.

Btw wasn't Rios drafted to play 3B? That was his position at Stanford IIRC.

He actually never played 3B at Stanford.  Played mostly OF and a little C.  When he was drafted, I think they announced him as a 3B, but he only played OF in the minors last year.  This past off-season, they said they wanted him to focus on catching.

The positional stuff won't matter if he can't hit, though.  Admittedly it's a small sample size, but he's been downright awful at the plate so far.
