Ohtani news coming today?

Don’t forget, Ohtani generates revenue in ticket sales, merchandise, advertising, etc. So, 500 mil is offset by the revenue he generates.  Look at us.  Ohtani was worth 5-10 thousand a night in attendance alone when he pitched.

He only pitched 14 games at home last season and he wont be pitching in 2024. The revenue he brings in doesn't offset running up to the cap and not being able to make significant improvements. Instead the Angels will be hobbling around with one year scrap heap guys to fill roster holes. That hasn't worked out the last 8 years.

When he does return to pitching it creates the 6 man rotation which has never proved successful, reducing your best pitchers by 7 games a year and tagging 26 games to a guy that shouldn't be in the rotation. He is a white elephant.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s actually insane to give Ohtani more than $450-500 million?

I think it's insane that professional athletes are among the highest paid people in the world, but more power to them for getting what they do.

Agree, with all of this Blarg.

He has basically held the Angels over a barrel for the last 5 years! Automatic 6man rotation, He would skip starts which either meant a bullpen game or moving someone up a day. I'm still going back over the last 2 years... Did any of his Home Runs give us a lead or a win? I remember mostly ass going one way hands going another when the game was on the line. Other than the WBC...

Does anyone remember a single game in the last 2years where he came through in the clutch? To take a lead or drive in the winning run in the 7th inning or later?

In that many games and at bats there has to be 10 or more? Right?

Whoever spends that much money on Ohtani will end up being sorry for it, including the Angels.

That is far too much money to pay one player, especially one pushing 30. There are also warning signs, in the form of two arm injuries that may turn him into a full time DH within the next 3-4 years. As much as I have enjoyed watching Ohtani play and I have marveled at his production, I'm ready to move on. The club made adjustments for him that adversely affected other players. Let somebody else overpay and wreck their payroll for years to come.

I see we're at the "are we sure Ohtani is even good?" stage of grief.

PB, I don't know if I'd go that far, but Vegas Halo Fan pretty much summed up how I feel about the situation.  I've loved watching him, but unless the team boosts payroll significantly, I just don't think it's realistic to think they'll be in a good position to get into the playoffs in the next couple years if they re-sign him.  The only way would be if both Trout and Rendon play full, healthy seasons and perform to the level they were at before injuries set in--and if some of the younger guys truly take a huge step forward.  That's a lot of hoping and wishing.

But imagine the Angels signing Ohtani and then doing other things to make the playoffs? That would be a fun as hell type story. Imagine the Dodgers whiffing on Ohtani and Yamomoto.

A guy can dream.....

I wholly reject a contrived measurement that ignores a player’s performance in the first 6 innings.

A player hits a three run homer in the third inning to tie the game, and then hits another three run homer in the sixth to tie the game, but strikes out in the eighth down by one run.

Yeah that guy isn’t “clutch.”  We don’t want guys like that.
