All the stats really say is the rest of the league sucked much worse than the Rangers and Diamondbacks. They earned the right to play for the championship by beating teams with better records without having better teams.

What this means is obvious.

The factors that lead to a great regular season don't apply in a short series.

Mostly, depth, consistency, steady focus on a day by day basis.

In a short series any player can change the outcome by getting uncharacteristically hot. Or great players getting cold.

And the clutch/mental factor becomes more important in a high stakes short series.

Players like Kershaw will forever have his HOF credentials tarnished. The 'big three' of Philly now will have a frustrating off season.

Conversely, baseball is filled with playoff heroes who did something big in a tough post seasons situation. Sometimes for multiple games. Sometimes just a big game changing play in a crucial game.

These heroes may or may not have impressive careers before or after. But they have their place in the lore of the game.

Bill Mazoroski, a very good but low profile player for the Pirates won the 1960 Series with maybe the most dramatic ninth inning tie breaking homer. Dusty Rhodes, Kirk Gibson, Don Larson amongst many also have their dramatic place in post season play. Only Gibson of those was an elite player.

And Bill Buckner stands out in a one play series changing blunder that forever tarnished his very good career.

But that's the nature of sports. Playoffs are a whole new level of intensity and challenges.
