Interesting that Stoneman's name was brought up.

He was a real rarity as GM. A former player. A pitcher who was better than his record, with two no hitters. But spent mostly on the expansion Expos. And he also worked totally outside of baseball after his playing career, in the office of a bank in Montreal. Brought back into baseball by the Expos where he did a credible job in the front office with limited resources. And where he learned about replenishing a farm system and getting value from under the radar veterans.

That experience, on the field, front office and in a financial environment gave him a unique perspective. With the Angels he was savvy, replenishing the roster shrewdly and keeping them winning, Under other circumstances his tenure should have been longer. But the culture changed with the ownership change. 

I wonder why there have been so few former players who became GMs? Difficult learning curve and apprenticeship maybe? Not trusted to understand finance and the process of scouting and development?

What's crazy about Stoneman and his era is that we went from a GM who everyone hated for never making trades, to one who traded everyone and we hated.
