Have the Angels ever?

Recommended Posts

With Trout having 4.8 million votes it looks like he is guaranteed a starting position in the All Star game. Have the Angels ever had a home grown talent voted in? I remember all the years of so and so because every team has to represent or someone being picked to replace an injured starter and of course big names formerly with other teams.

Trout has the third most votes of anyone in the AL behind Davis and Cabrera.

As good as Chris Davis is so far, having that many votes is crazy given how mediocre he was through 2012.

Good to see though, as he is the best AL 1B so far.

Orioles fans seem to be ballot stuffing a bit this year. Lots of their players names are higher in the vote tallies than they should be (IMO).

Joyner is the only one I can remember.

He won the 1B voting with a write-in vote as a rookie in 1986.

Salmon didn't make it for the longest time.

Erstad, GA, Glaus, and Edmonds never started an ASG game as a Halos player.

Tim Salmon never made an all star team.  Thank you, Joe Torre.

Well then, he was from the Angels minor league since he was the first of their minor leaguers. Doesn't matter where he was drafted from, he had never played an inning in professional ball until the Angels picked him up as a 19 year old. He spent more time in the Angels minor league that the one season in the Red Sox. So essentially he is the first of the Angels minor league players to start in an All Star game.

Oh, and screw the fans they are idiots and should have no say in who plays in the All Star game since it is all controlled by ballot box stuffing.

I'm still bitter that Tim Salmon never made an All Star team. Even though he was a slow starter, his first half numbers were close a few times.  Heck, in his rookie year, he hit .282/.393/.519 in the first half.   His OPS+ was 148.  He had better numbers than Kirby Puckett and Joe Carter at the break. They both got voted in. I'm fine with proven veterans getting the edge over a rookie, but Salmon never got that edge later in his career.  Bryce Harper's OPS+ was 127 last year and he got in.

So many scrubs have made All Star teams based on a couple good months.  It's lame.  You should consider more than that.  Recent history, going back to last season... and even beyond.  Screw the sports media that wants exciting players in the game so they will have something to talk about. A spot should be earned to some extent.
