Angels call up Colin Cowgill

Calhoun will be a trade piece when we go for another arm

can't trade him for anything of value if he isn't good enough to play with us when we have hampered by injuries. Plus Calhoun isn't highly regarded in the prospect rankings so the best way to improve his stock is give him a shot at ML pitching.

Hopefully not Old Mathis.

we traded Old Mathis to the Orioles 3 days before we played a series agaisnt them. Unfortunately Scioscia didn't bother to update any of the hand signals and Old Mathis was able to see all of our moves before they happened and catch something like 3 runners stealing in one game.

I doubt Cowgill plays much if at all, he's just filler for now.  I think their thinking is that Calhoun needs to keep it going in AAA, playing every day.  He wouldn't play much up here.  I think we will see lots of Shuckie and Hawpie until Bourjos returns.  If Bourjos stays on schedule he should be back by July 19th (first game after the All Star break).  That means we are only Shucking and Hawping for 11 games.  Six of those games are against top notch teams at home, and five against poor teams on the road.  If we could go 4-2 and then 4-1 we would be one game over even with 2 1/2 months to make a run.

We also have July 8th and July 11th off to ease the starting pitching and bullpen pressures.  And since no one other than Trout will be an All Star, that's a nice break for this team as well (four days).  If Trout still has any negative hammy signs hopefully they will only use him for 2-3 innings at the All Star game.

why is hawpe here? what does he bring to the table?

He's a left handed 1st baseman.

Shuck > Pujols = Trumbo at DH.

Pujols > Trumbo > Hawpe defensively at 1st base

Hamilton > Calhoun > Trumbo >> Hawpe = Shuck  defensively at RF

Bourjos > Trout > Hamilton > Calhoun >>> else at CF

what was your question again?

f'n  Scioscia :(

How about calling up Calhoun now, because it won't affect his control years of FA, and let him play most of the time for 3 weeks (or however long Bourjos is out)?   See what Calhoun can do, as he has nothing left to prove in the minors.

Shuck can share DH duties with Trumbo depending on Trumbo's struggles, and VERY OCCASIONALLY (okay once in a blue moon) play LF.

Can Hamilton or Calhoun play LF?
