Actually, he was in SD after they acquired him.

It was only really done because, at the time, Arte was selling the team. They didn't want to saddle the new owner with some manager on a multi-year deal on a guy he never picked or maybe even wanted. Obviously, with Arte changing his mind about selling, it now makes the 1yr deal for Nevin look completely useless
