Godoy has actually hit very well in the minors over the years.   Especially against RHers (as a LHed bat).  Considerably better than Wallach.  Assuming his defense is similar to Wallach, he probably moves up the depth chart because of his bat.  Not saying he's someone to get excited about but he makes more sense as a backup than Wallach or Thaiss based on the profile.

Can't really read much into AAA catching depth, but notably, with Godoy and Wallach, it perhaps slightly increases the likelihood that O'Hoppe might open up with the MLB club.  Or that Wallach gets let go in favor of Godoy, given that Perry has stated his preference to have two catchers who hit from opposite sides.

Mining the scouting reports for Godoy, he seems to consistently be deemed a "good third catcher" on a 40 man roster.  In other words - decent catching depth that can probably fill in as needed.

Thaiss bats left.

Looks like Thaiss is getting every opportunity to be the backup to start the year.

I'm thinking catcher is going to truly be an open competition.

Stassi will be one of them, we know that. He's got the contract. If he won't hit, he still makes a good backup because of his glove and leadership.

If O'Hoppe hits, the starting job is his, because you don't block someone that good. Great leader, great arm, good bat...

If he doesn't hit, Thaiss enters the frame because he bats left handed and can hit particularly well for a catcher. Thaiss may be kept regardless, even as a third stringer as he's out of options and improves your depth at 1B and 3B and gives you a left handed pinch hitting option off the bench.
