That's what happens when you become a slave to analytics and ignore what your eyes and gut tell you. They had all season to watch Wheeler in pressure situations. Maldonado shifts his stance intending to get hit ( smart on his part). A weak single. And no opportunity for their best pitcher to even try to work out of it. He had plenty of gas left and wasn't even hit hard. Thompson will have this hanging over him forever. You gotta show faith in your best to at least go another batter. The Philly bullpen was erratic all year and the moment was too big this time.

Anything is possible, but aside from Verlander and Gurriel (both of whom are free agents), they're still a pretty young team overall.  Even if they don't bring back Verlander, they will still be the favorites in the West heading into next year, I'd imagine.
