OC Register: Angels’ Mike Trout cleared to increase workouts

Recommended Posts

ANAHEIM ― Finally, the Angels got some good news on Mike Trout.

Trout met Thursday with back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins and was cleared to begin rotational exercises Wednesday. The 10-time All-Star hasn’t played since July 12 because of a costovertebral dysfunction.

While Trout has been able to engage in lower-body workouts since going on the injured list, upper-body workouts are essential for rehabbing this injury, located where the ribcage meets the back at the T5 vetebrae.

The accelerated timetable for rehabilitation gives Trout a more realistic chance of returning before the end of this season. He was predictably upbeat when he spoke to reporters Sunday morning.

“It went from ‘my career is over’ to now I’m hopefully going to play here soon,” Trout said. “It’s just one of those things that’s scary. It’s a back thing. Baseball players, you go through stuff. I get it. You like hearing news when you talk to a doctor that knows what he’s talking about, and Watkins is one of the best.”

The meeting did not help Trout clarify how he sustained the injury in the first place.

“I couldn’t pinpoint how it happened,” Trout said. “I think it was just over time. It just flared up. Couldn’t tell you exactly ― maybe when you’re a baseball player and you swing a lot, do a lot of activity, it acts up a little bit and obviously it acted up.”

Magneuris Sierra and Brandon Marsh have alternated in center field in Trout’s absence. The Angels were 5-8 with Trout on IL entering Sunday’s game.

“It’s definitely encouraging news,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said. “Just to get him ramped up, we’re anxious to see how that feels for him too. I don’t anticipate any problems.”

ALSO

Right-hander Jimmy Herget returned from his minor league rehabilitation assignment and was reinstated from the injured list. Chase Silseth was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake as a corresponding 26-man roster move. … The Angels are scheduled to send Noah Syndergaard, Shohei Ohtani and Jose Suarez to the mound in that order during their three-game series with Oakland beginning Tuesday. The A’s will counter, respectively, with Frankie Montas and Orange County natives Cole Irvin and James Kaprielian. …

UP NEXT

The Angels have a day off Monday.

The sad thing is that a few years ago, the question was whether Trout would surpass Mays and Cobb to join Ruth and Bonds in the 150+ WAR club, or fall a bit short but still be in the 130+ club (top 10).

Now I'm not even sure he's going to make it to 100 (he's at 79.8 now). I mean, probably. But I think what we've seen this year is what we're going to get going forward. He'll play 80-130 games a year and limp his way across the 100 WAR mark, then probably stall out and/or inch up a bit more to around 110.

No shame in that, but just sad compared to where he was at after 2019: the best player in baseball history by WAR through age 27. Now he's probably still going to reach the top 20 (about 100 WAR), but not the top 10 (125 WAR).

Of course I still hold out hope that he can manage this injury and have one or two Troutian 8+ WAR seasons, but to do that he'll need to play in 140 games, and I just don't see that.

I’m pretty confident that his back ailment is going to spread to another body part.

And what gives you that confidence, a medical degree or the way the tea leaves settled in your cup today?

Yes, this is one of the stupidest fad muscle building exercises that should have been removed from his workouts.

And what gives you that opinion, a kinesiology degree or some direct proof that this exercise contributed to his back condition?

yes.

Next question.

For a guy who has never told us where he went to college, you sure have a lot of degrees.... Law, Kinesiology, Medical, Economics, Marketing, etc., etc.

I was ridiculed when I posted that picture and suggested the workouts may have been too much strain on his body. Now we're seeing it was a legitimate question all along.

Was it?  I haven't read anything that shows workouts like this impacted his back.  If there is such an article, I'd like to see it.

I totally agree. His injury is so rare, I don't believe his back/ribcage issue has anything to do with workouts.

Now should he be "maxing out" or hitting PR's with lifting? I don't think that's necessary, and I feel like it creates unnecessary wear and tear on the body that would affect other things down the line, things that would be unrelated to such a rare injury at such a young age.
