Way too many fans have been quick to judge Adelll and wanted to rush him...

First they were quick to anoint him as the next great player.

Then they couldn't wait for him to get called up.

Then they wanted to trade him.

Then they wanted to label him a bust.

And on and on and on...

He's 23 years old.

Funny how fans were more patient with Taylor Ward.

Well I can guess why that is.

they're not gonna keep him up to be the 4th or 5th OFer and get 4 at bats a week.  Marsh is the better defender.  Ward has played better and there a guy named Trout.

the bottom line is that he hasn't done enough when up to warrant being handed a full time job.  He was better in this go around and hopefully he's not so fragile that he shouldn't expect to be on the shuttle a bit based on his overall play.  If he is, then that doesn't bode well for the future.  His time will come if he keeps getting better.

Hell they seem to give Ward and Trout all these extra days off!

They weren't patient with Ward.  They all thought Ward sucked until he did his Mike Trout impersonation the first two months this year.

I wouldn't trade Adell - well, unless someone made the Angels an offer they can't refuse. But consider the Angels depth problem, which has really been highlighted this year. Let's say Trout goes down next year for a few weeks: would rather have a a Lagares/Whitefield/Thomas type, or a more mature Adell step in?

Maybe it sucks for Adell on paper - having no clear route to starts other than off days and injuries, but you take it year by year.

Let's imagine a very possible scenario for the rest of the year, and then the situation in ST of 2023. Marsh continues to improve and stabilizes a bit; Ward has come down to earth but is still a very good bat; Trout is Trout. Meanwhile, Adell has continued to improve, is called up a couple more times. So let's say they finish 2022 with something like this:

  • Trout: 140 g, .290/.420/.600, 180 wRC+, 8 WAR
  • Ward: 130 g, .290/.400/.550, 160 wRC+, 6 WAR
  • Marsh: 140 g, .265/.320/.420, 110 wRC+, 3 WAR
  • Adell: 70 g, .250/.290/.430, 105 wRC+, 1 WAR

Or something like that. The point being, you have three clear starters, and one guy who continues to improve with a ton of potential. And then you have the scrap-heap guys like Lagares et al.

So it is the off-season, and you know one of your biggest problems in 2022 was depth. You get some offers for Adell, but nothing more than a grade B prospect or two. You don't get anything equivalent to what he was just a year ago: A 60 FV prospect.

So you hold onto him, and go into ST with all four on the roster. Trout-Ward-Marsh are penciled in as the starters, with Adell as 4th outfielder.

There are 162 x 3 = 486 outfield starts a year. With basic health, but injuries here and there, maybe we can pencil in Marsh-Trout-Ward for 400 starts next year. That leaves 86 starts. Add in pinch-hitting, late game replacements, and a few games at DH, and Adell could easily surpass 110 games played next year.

And furthermore, situations change. Maybe it turns out that Ward's start this year was really flukey, and while he's made a jump forward and is a good player, he's more of a 120-130 wRC+ guy than a true elite bat. Depending upon how Adell matures, maybe Ward is traded in a year or two. Marsh seems less likely, as he combines the best combination of all-around skills and upside of the three.

So yeah, I don't trade Adell unless the Angels get the equivalent of a 60 FV prospect or young player, at a key position of need: middle infield, starting pitcher, maybe catcher (Stassi is good, but gets injured a lot).

A similar outfield log jam is one of the reasons the team traded Jim Edmonds.

Ward has shown an ability to play third, and as a former catcher he should be able to handle first base. With all the injuries to Rendon and Trout and Walsh's issues with left handed pitchers you would think it would be easy to find time for these guys if they are a little flexible.
