OC Register: Angels lose rain-shortened game to White Sox, ending 6-game winning streak

Recommended Posts

CHICAGO — The Angels’ six-game winning streak came to a soggy end Saturday afternoon.

The Angels lost 4-0 to the Chicago White Sox in a game shortened to six innings because of rain.

Left-hander José Suarez was charged with all four runs in four-plus innings of work, another disappointing start in what has been a rough beginning to his season.

After four starts, Suarez has a 6.35 ERA. He hasn’t yet to finish the fifth inning. He has not looked like the pitcher who won a 2022 rotation spot by posting a 3.75 ERA in 2021.

On Saturday, he allowed a homer to Tim Anderson on his first pitch of the game. After that, he settled into a groove for a couple innings. He then escaped a tough jam in the fourth, allowing a pair of singles to start the inning and then retiring three in a row.

He didn’t escape the fifth, though.

Suarez gave up a double to Josh Harrison, a single to Tim Anderson and a three-run homer to Luis Robert. After Suarez surrendered another hit and a walk, his day was over.

By contrast, Chicago right-hander Vince Velasquez had put the clamps on the Angels’ hitters.

The Angels had just two singles in the first four innings, and one of those runners was erased on a double play. Their best chance came in the fifth, but David Fletcher hit a flyout to strand two runners.

Soon after that, Suarez allowed a 1-0 deficit to turn into a 4-0 deficit. And soon after that, a downpour drenched the ballpark. Mike Trout had worked Velasquez through an eight-pitch at-bat when umpires signaled for the grounds crew to cover the field.

After a xxx delay, the game was called.

The good news for the Angels was that they were able to give all their top relievers the day off. Because they played enough to make it an official game, they don’t have to worry about a doubleheader Sunday.

More to come on this story.

What happens here is things automatically pop up here the moment they are posted. It’s great that you see all my stuff, but the problem is you never see an updated story.

Last night I had put a story in the system to be used if the game was called. (Hence, “after a xxxx delay”) And one of my editors hit the wrong button, then deleted it really quickly.

Anyway, the moral of the story is you should always click the link instead of reading what’s posted here. Because otherwise you’ll never see the most updated story.

(There were several updates today to the story about Suarez being demoted, for example.)
