$25m for this year and $25m player option for next year.

I don’t think I would have wanted the Angels to give that player option.

it makes it a 2/$50M deal if he has a bad season. Great deal to avoid.

Just now, Biergott said:

Essentially 2/$50m at age 38 coming off TJS at What’s this make Ray or Scherzer worth?

Unfortunately if he’d gone anywhere his arm would fall off.  But he’ll probably be dominant with the asstros

Doesn’t work like that.  Verlander and Ray are completely different in age, history, and health.

Verlander’s deal really isn’t going to impact Ray.

Astros really got taken, this is nice news. If he's rubbish, they're on the hook for $50m for 2 years of rehabbing sub-par Verlander on an innings limit (he went under the knife at the end of September 2020, so only 18 mths to Spring Training 2022 and 6 months behind Syndergaard). If he's back to his best - and it will take a fair chunk of the season before he is - then he'll opt-out. It's all upside for Verlander.

Here's a sobering thought: if post TJ rehabbing Verlander is getting $25m, what are Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and Matt Scherzer's agent likely to be asking for?

Well Scherzer's agent is Scott Broas so there's your answer for him. $35M+ AAV guaranteed.
