Or sign him to 1-year deal with two team options with an innings pitched incentive type deal over a 3 years?

I mean he's good. He was hitting upper 90s with his fastball midseason and late.

The reason why no one is taking about Riding is because he fell off a cliff after a hot start.

It's probably fatigue induced.

But if it counts for anything, I was told the Angels showed interest in him last winter before he re-upped with Chicago. The interest was supposedly mutual.

Or one team option, followed by one player option.  Gives each side some protection/upside depending on what happens.  If he's great in 2022, the Angels benefit from controlling him for another year.  If he's good in 2022, then falters in 2023, Rodon has some protection, and the Angels' downside is limited to one more season.

EDIT: Edit to add that I'm actually not really in favor of this, but could definitely see a Rodon deal coming out of the trainwreck that has occurred in the past 24 hours.

Meh.

Not popular, but I've long been a proponent of solving the rotation by trade. You have a much higher success rate of getting a frontline arm in their best years for the most flexible payroll commitment.

Give me one or two of Castillo, Gray, or Mahle - throw in Amir Garrett. (+$10m). Send them a couple young pitchers, an OF prospect, and a SS prospect.
Sign a closer (+$10-$15m) and sign a good OF or two - Soler, Conforto, Rosario, Joc, Pham, . (+$10-15m)
I'd even consider trading the other OF prospect to Miami for Max Meyer still if you're real concerned about needing cheap pitching.

This sucks overall but team-building via FA isn't a great idea as we've come to know.

This one came from a high Angels executive. So as sure as he was about Ray, I was comfortable sharing the info with you all.

Oh well. I'll just PM a few of our longtime members the next time I get some info rather than posting it publicly. Sorry it didn't happen guys. I'm just as disappointed as you are.

It’s not your fault, mang. I got my hopes up, so it’s on me. It’s not like you’re the one making the negotiations with free agents.

Though, you do make for a nice scapegoat for our frustrations/anger.

I'm not mad.  I just like giving you shit.  No worries.  We can't all be Rahul Setty, after all...

Don’t worry about it man, nothing to apologize for.  Your guy think we’ve got a shot at Stroman ?

Reds going to realize the Angels need a top arm now. The price tag on Castillo just went from really high to downright stupid high.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention but the price was always astronomically high.   The Angels can't part with anything they want without creating more holes and weakening themselves in other areas.

The entire premise for a Castillo deal is that they'll take one of the OFers and then additional prospects... Meaning its putting the team in a situation where its absolutely reliant on Upton and Trout to remain healthy and none of the pitching to break down.

They haven't added anything yet, they have simply replaced what they had...

I just don’t think the angels can’t afford to trade the prospect or young cheap player  capital necessary to get the type of pitcher they need.  Also I hate trading fielders for pitchers.

Time to pivot. This blows, but these things happen.

The good news is the Angels outbid the Dodgers for Scherzer and have that money to spend, and while Ray was their top target and missed on him, Stroman has been pretty consistent in his career, while Ray had a career year in 2021.

Also why isn't everyone talking about Carlos Rodon enough? His stuff and stats were on par with Robbie Ray in 2021 outside of innings pitched (since he missed some time).

Probably, Due to the fact we could have got him for the minimum last year after he was Non-tendered by the Chi-Sox.... Perry wasn't interested then, I don't see him interested now at 20M per...

I have no faith in Minasian and Moreno.  The Angels should have secured one of the pitchers not named Scherzer.  There are no excuses except for fucking up.

People need to quit including the GM’s name. This is 100% on Arte. How it’s not perfectly clear to everyone now is beyond me
