  1. 1. How would you address shortstop?

    • Move Fletcher to SS
      3
    • Stay internal (Rengifo, Mayfield, Davis, Wong, etc)
      22
    • Trade (say the player you want in your reply)
      5
    • Buy low in free agency (think 1 year deal, likely a defensive specialist)
      8
    • Spend big (Semien, Correa, Story, Baez, Seager)
      7

I'd pass on Story. His high strikeout and low OPS outside of Coors isn't going to play well in the West Coast pitcher friendly or neutral parks. He gets a huge Babhip advantage at Coors that won't exist in Anaheim.

Sign Semien for 2B, if Brendon Davis has a solid spring & continues to show promise in AAA maybe you let him take the job at SS mid-season if Fletcher continues to be the Fletch we all have come to love prior to the final 6 or so weeks of the season...then trade David Fletcher and his friendly contract to a team in need at the deadline.

Jose Iglesias' defensive stats last year were drastic outliers to his career norms. Rather than go with an internal option like Rengifo, you can get him cheap on a 1-year deal.  Worse case scenario is that Rengifo takes his job.  There are certainly other options in his price range but I wouldn't pull out my pitchfork if they decided on gambling that he can return to close to his career norm.  Especially if they do their homework to try to figure out what caused such a massive dip in performance.

this is maybe just me, but here's what I'd do

go hard after Chris Taylor.  I think he'll cost around 11m per.  Probably for 3 years.    So worst case is he can play 2b or SS with Fletch or Rengifo at SS at 2b.  With Davis in the mix maybe.  And then Taylor can also fill in at multiple other spots if needed.

then I let the market play out and work on pitching.  If one of the top FA SS is available late on a 1yr deal then I consider it if Arte is willing to pony up.  Then Taylor becomes the full super util for both IF and OF if and when injuries or poor performance happen.

And what happened to Baez in NY?  His OBP bumped to .371 and he took a decent number of walks.  How many teams are going to buy into that?  I hope we don't.  But he's the guy that might end up with a 1yr deal by the time the off season is over.  While I'm not a fan, I would consider that.  I'll take someone who's had some 6 WAR seasons and is entering age 29 on a 1yr deal.

Yeah I'd sign Taylor but I think Dodgers bring him back on 4 year deal for 50 mill.

Trade.

My target: Paul DeJong.

He has been a very good defender, which means his floor is still a ~2 win player in a full season at SS if his bat doesn't rebound. I'm betting on his bat rebounding, because then you're looking at a 3-4 WAR SS under control for as many as 4 seasons.

The acquisition price should be low because Edmundo Sosa has emerged as St. Louis' starting SS and they could also look to sign a free agent SS, like Seager or Story, this offseason.

He's making: $6.166M in '22, $9,166,667 in '23, and has two club options for '24 and '25 at $12.5M and $15M.

the cards are in the playoffs.  Why would they trade their SS?  Who, they would also consider, a likely rebound candidate.

I literally answered that in the post.

Since you apparently missed it, here it is again: Edmundo Sosa has emerged as St. Louis' starting SS and they could also look to sign a free agent SS, like Seager or Story, this offseason.

Beyond staying internal (my close 2nd preferred choice) or hitting up free agency (distant 3rd choice), I would choose one (actually two) particular SS to trade for, via the following base (meaning it would involve these players and maybe additional finishing pieces) transaction:

Los Angeles Angels Send:

CF Brandon Marsh

SS Luis Rengifo

Miami Marlins Send:

SP Max Meyer

SS Miguel Rojas

RP Richard Bleier

As much as I hate the idea of trading Marsh, the Angels need pitching and a good defensive SS and this deal would get both. Meyer has a lot of upside if he can develop that 3rd pitch better and Rojas is one of the Top 5 defensive SS's in baseball, still. Bleier would add a veteran lefty arm that can put the ball on the ground a lot. Would only add about $6.5M or so to payroll.

The Angels could then focus on a free agent starter (in the $20M per year range) and sign a free agent OF to play LF (say no more than $5M give or take). Some here (I think @Chuckster70, actually) have advocated for Rojas before and he would be an inexpensive, 1-year alternative to see if Brendon Davis is for real or we simply bridge again until guys like Kyren Paris and Arol Vera arrive on the scene.

Another name to consider in trade is Dansby Swanson if the Braves are willing.

Ultimately, though, I am super okay with staying internal on Rengifo and/or flipping Fletcher to SS and playing Luis at 2B.

Marlins do not make that trade.

I disagree. Rojas is on a team option year and Jazz Chisolm is ready to take over. Meyer is good but expendable when you consider the rest of their pitching staff. They need a good CF and Marsh is that. Sending Rengifo allows them to run him out at SS to start the season to suppress Chisolm's service time and then they can employ him at 2B or in a utility role.

Marsh has a lot of trade value, now, you shouldn't discount it.

To me, I don't think it makes sense to trade Marsh for a pitcher that hasn't even pitched in the majors (even if they are a good pitching prospect).

If they're trading Marsh, it should be in a deal to get a proven quality starter.

I could see them moving DeJong to get out from under his contract and potentially explore a different SS. It's not a surefire thing, but there's some potential.
