My grandma lived there for several years before she got Alzheimer's.

So....

The night the LA riots broke out I had tickets to the Lakers Blazers game at the Forum about 30 rows behind courtside courtesy of a vendor... My GF at the time had lived her entire life in Yorba Linda, never gone to LA/Inglewood, had no real idea what urban decay looked like but despite that she wanted to drive us there... Brand new Miata, car didn't even have its plates yet, just the personalized plate holder that read, "Yorba Linda, Land of Gracious Living."

Off we go.

The entire drive to the Forum she was commenting about the graffiti and well, "the Inglewood"....  Game starts, shit starts to hit the fan and the screens over center court start showing what's happening outside...  Lakers crowd is being it's usual self, not really giving a damn but my GF was losing her shit, pointing up at the screen, and asking ..."didn't we drive by that!?" ...  I just kept downplaying it all, trying to keep her from stressing.

Lakers were losing, the screens would at times show what was happening but the Lakers crowd was being its usual self.... when they started to play "I love LA" , they swapped the "I love it!" to "We burned it!"... Everyone found this hilarious except for her...  Still I kept downplaying it... "Don't worry, those Boys markets are everywhere up here"..... at one point I tried to get her mind off of what was happening by saying "man, Olden Polynice is a funny name don't you think?" This was actually working until whatever asshole in charge of the screens above center court decided to show an ABC reporter standing outside the Forum who panned to his left and showed how close the flames were to us...  At this point she didn't even talk, she just feverishly smacked my arm with one hand while pointing up to the big screen.  I loled at the absurdity of the situation but she was not amused.

Lakers were losing, people were leaving, but I just assured her I knew how to get out of the area and that we would be better off waiting for Police to set up barriers and the sort to diffuse/control the situation... Furious comeback, Lakers ended up winning I think 121-119.  She's a complete basket case by then but it was time to enter the madness..

I asked her to give me the keys so I could get us out of there... New car or not she was more than happy to do so...  I head away from the flames and then south... the streets were surprisingly empty save for the clusterfuck getting away from Manchester and Prairie....  She finally started to calm down a bit once she sees I've put some space between us and the Forum...  At this point I actually cracked and started laughing to myself...  She asks what I could be funny....   So I tell her.

"There is a riot breaking out where white people are getting beat up and I'm driving in a Miata with a license plate holder that reads Yorba Linda, Land of Gracious Living".

To this day I can't hear/think about the LA riots without thinking of that license plate holder.

Good Times!

I love your ability to laugh in the face of danger.

Imagine if you took her to a lakers game after they won the finals. It would have been the exact same scenario

Is that the new place, in placentia? Off Kraemer?

First we’re talking about geography…

Fuck this place is weird I listening to a discourse on PLACENTA.  Seriously.

Then we’re talking about Anatomy.  I can’t keep up with AW academics.
