Ok, fashion took a turn for the worse in the 70's.

Years ago, we were having a gift exchange in our office. My supervisor, when asked what he wanted, would say things like "a new car" or "a new suit" (with a $10 gift limit). One of the secretaries in the office told us that she had made what she described as "an awful leisure suit" for her husband years earlier, and he was about the same height and weight as my supervisor. A scheme was born. On gift exchange day, he opened up the box to find a horrific-looking red-and-white plaid polyester suit with wide lapels. I have to give him credit, though - he put the suit on and posed for pictures in it.
