Antarctica's Dry Valleys are the most arid places on Earth, but underneath their icy soils lies a vast and ancient network of salty, liquid water filled with life, a new study finds.

 

Yet there is life in this extreme landscape. For instance, bacteria living under Taylor Glacier stain its snout a deep blood red. The rust-colored brine, called Blood Falls, pours into Lake Bonney in the southernmost of the three largest Dry Valleys. The dramatic colors offer shocking relief to senses overwhelmed by the glaring white ice and dull brown rocks.

I catch these fish all the time and always love the look they make from this angle so I finally took a picture.

That looks like a whitefish, Nate. They have a tendency to overpopulate in Montana rivers and years ago there were no limits on them in winter. Most fisherman back in the day used to just toss them on land and let the local wildlife take care of the carcasses.

My grandfather used to put them into a smoker which made them somewhat edible on a cracker. My wife absolutely loved them and we had a big package of whitefish on the drive back to California one year. She made herself almost sick sneaking some the entire 20 hour drive.
