One of those decommissioned ships my brother's father in law served on in WWII. He kept a complete diary of every day on board including a map of all the areas it was deployed as a support ship, being strafed and involved in at least one naval battle. At the end of the war the Navy had a huge surplus they couldn't maintain so many were used as target practice and in this case a nuclear bomb test.
