On the bright side for Warren, math skills are so terrible in this country that 1/4 lb burgers are more popular than 1/3 lb burgers because more people believe 1/4 > 1/3.  In that case 1/1024 must be tremendously bigly.

The Asians do wreck us in this department. All the Asians.

“Robert E. Lee was a great general, and Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia,” Mr. Trump told the crowd. “He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee. But Grant figured it out, and Grant is a great general, and Grant came from right here.”

The turning of the tide in the Civil War was Meades out maneuvering of Lee at Gettysburg and forcing the confederate army to retreat to Virginia. It was the confedericies first true defeat and forced Lee to play a defensive campaign afterward due to the casualties.

The Cherokee Nation pretty much told Warren to STFU.

"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America," Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. "Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage."

Do you realize what the Saudi government means to the US?

US made bombs are being used by the Saudis to kill civilians in Yemen. Including one bomb that killed 40 kids on a school bus.  Is the all mighty dollar the most important thing here?  Should we continue to be war profiteers?

Gettysburg was an important victory (and was part of the turning point of the war) but was not overly decisive. It being the most popular battle of the Civil War makes people think it was the true turning point.

Grant's victory in Vicksburg one day after Gettysburg was much more decisive.  It split the Confederacy in two and caused them to lose their last stronghold on the Mississippi River.

Oh and Lincoln didn't have a phobia of Lee (this is inconsequential but Trump is an idiot and this offends my inner civil war nerd DAMNIT!). He knew the destruction of Lee's army in the east (not the capture of Richmond) would help bring down the confederates. He couldn't find a general willing to go toe to toe with Lee. Meade held his ground but Lincoln still had to bring in Grant eight months after Gettysburg to make Meade fight a war of attrition to grind Lee's army away.

I’ve read civil war books that describe the battle of Antietam as the decisive blow that broke the Army of Virginia.  And thus, the south’s ability to threaten the north.

A lot of carnage during most of these battles. But Antietam was extra brutal.

Antietam was a problem for the confederacy for a couple reasons. First and foremost the south knew England and France were closely watching the events unfold in '62. In the east, the rebels weren't supposed to be having this much success (mainly due to McCllelan being so purposefully incompetent). Davis was hoping for intervention and recognition from Europe. A victory on northern soil they felt might actually cause intervention. There was also hope invading Maryland might cause them to join their ranks and of course threaten to cut off Washington.

Once the Union discovered Lee's campaign plans, Lee should have retreated back into Virginia but decided to stick it out and fight. He did a lot damage to the federals but took enormous losses himself. At the end of the day, he held his ground and waited one more day before retreating. Yielding the field looked like a victory for the Union, thus negating Europeon intervention, leaving the south to fend for itself (not sure Europe would have intervened but who knows. Lincoln issuing the emancipation proclamation after the victory probably dissuades them even more). As far as Maryland, while heavily sympathetic to the south and a slave state, Lee invaded Western Maryland, not southern. The western part was slightly more unionist and therefore more unlikely to join the south. This pretty much guaranteed they weren't seceding in the long run.

Another ironic thing about that campaign was the amount of desertions Lee's army suffered at the beginning of it. Despite victories during the summer, a lot of his soldiers felt like an invasion of the north was hypocritical of them. They thought they were being invaded by a foreign force (the north) and wanted to defend their "homeland." Lee loses thousands due to desertions before a battle even takes place along with those that have no shoes or are too malnurished to march north.

You're right though. 23,000 casualties in about twelve hours is pretty damn brutal.

Only thing more brutal is when this thread reaches 23,000 pages. God, please spare us.
